One Room Schoolhouse, Once a Signature of The American Education Landscape.

Is now a vision for the future of education. The kind of teaching that takes place in this environment is much needed in today's world. There are distinct pedagogical advantages children receive in this environment. ‘Limited’ by one teacher, the students often helped with the teaching; older kids or those who mastered material more quickly would help others. A student who was advanced in math, for example, could simply do math with the older kids. Because there was more fluidity in the learning, the one-room schoolhouse became more of a community-based education where everyone had to pitch in to some extent.

Studies have shown that students learn better when they have to teach the material to others. Peer-based and team-based learning has also been found to be quite beneficial, particularly to prepare students for success in workplaces where group-based work across teams of different ages and backgrounds is prevalent.

Should the education system teach your kids coding?

For some it may be difficult to imagine a young brain learning something seemingly complex, but coding for kids is reality. Years ago, the code chatter hype was a whole new idea and novel to the education system. Coding is basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for kids to understand and be able to work with the technology that now surrounds them. Teaching children to learn coding at a young age prepares them for the future. Understanding computers and learning the basics of coding helps children to develop an appreciation of how things work. It also teaches them how software engineers use math in order to solve problems in a logical and creative way. This is an important reason that coding should be taught in schools. Learning to code gives children a stronger ability to solve problems which is useful in daily life situations. The benefits of learning to code are:

Why are having birthday parties important?

Celebrating a child’s birthday gives parents the opportunity to demonstrate the joy and love they have due to the addition of that child to our world. Sharing these special experiences enhances the bond and security between parent and child, and increased secure attachment has lasting effects on a child’s self-esteem, development, behavior an emotions. This type of bonding also applies to children and their school peers.

The annual experience of the seemingly sudden change from one time to another is of great importance: since there is no obvious or immediate physical cause, as with other types of changes, children consider a birthday party to be a regularly occurring, growth-enhancing event. According to developmental psychology:

•They raise their self-esteem. When a child feels celebrated, they also feel loved and meaningful in their family role. Their birthday becomes important in their parents’ lives.
•They strengthen family bonds. Having family traditions is positive. No matter what the size of the celebration is, what is relevant, is the sense of being together to celebrate something special.
•They establish social relationships. Inviting a couple of friends, grandparents, or the whole family to a birthday party helps the child to relate better through feelings of companionship and kindness.
•They create positive memories. A study of preschool memories says that most childhood memories are not really memories, but rather a memory created from a lot of data collected from different sources in an unconscious way, like sensations, smells, and music. So, creating memories from a celebration can be something really meaningful.
•It helps them to have a perception of time. Children are not aware of their growth if not through others. That’s why birthdays are a great way for them to discover the process of growing up.

The most important thing is to spend time having fun and experience love, and joy throughout the day.

Fun Recess At The Park

Are you worried about your kids going to recess at school?

In the face of a pandemic schools are faced with a challenge of how to incorporate recess into children’s school days once they go back to face-to-face learning. They must also follow public health guidelines amid the crisis. Sadly, without the pandemic crisis 20% of public schools are cutting recess and play time from students attending public schools across the country. Fears of coronavirus infection on the playground are real but transmission of the virus is much less likely in outdoor environments.

Children receive many benefits from recess and unstructured playtime with their peers such as reduced stress, promotion of social skills, fight childhood obesity and improvement of brain function. After all the mind cannot be educated without using the body. The freedom to move, run and play especially outdoors, has a tremendous impact on children’s abilities to focus and control themselves throughout the day. Recess time gives more opportunity for socialization, teamwork and practice with conflict-resolution skills.

At Lightyear Academy, we maintain small group sizes so that our children’s recess does not get interrupted due to COVID-19. We make sure our children receive the social support and physical activity they need to maintain healthy physical and psychological health especially during this time of isolation. Remember, children are not immune from the trauma this pandemic is currently causing. We understand the benefits of recess reverberate well beyond that short play period.
