His Story:
In May 2019 a 9 year old brought to the Center by his parents concerned about his attention, focus and speech along with reading issues. His parents consider him an ‘easy going child’ but would have behavior issues at school. He was evaluated and participated in an 8 week grant funded program along with neurofeedback training.
After completing the 8 week grant program and receiving over 20 neurofeedback sessions, his parents wrote the following:
“He has been improving greatly with his speech and his ability to express himself to such a level that we can now understand him and truly enjoy conversation with him. We have also seen great improvement with completing verbal task, ie, giving him verbal instructions to accomplish chores and other things around the house.
There are definitely changes in fidgeting; he doesn’t seem to be so fidgety with his hands and feet. He is much more relaxed and easy to go along with the flow of things around him.
We definitely aren’t telling him to focus as much when doing simple task.
We are so impressed with the love and compassion of the staff at the Rehab Center and their deep desire to see and help him succeed. Our hearts are overwhelmed and I strongly recommend anyone with a need to come here.
Thank you to all the Center Staff for what you’ve done for our son and others!”

Spirit Week----- Holiday Headgear.
“Don’t even try to get those Christmas secrets out of me” 😉
One of Santa’s elves was spotted in the building saying “I still have so many toys to make!” Merry Christmas from Elf Lincoln!
Nicholas School Spirit Week, Red and Green day.
Fireworks are fun any time of year! Take the time to watch his spontaneous interaction 👏🎇👏🎆
Finding the right motivation is key! Look at how high he’s raising his arms to stop the spinner!
This train has been a new fascination of hers. She’s doing great learning how to make it work. Today we added a new component: pushing the switch to ask for the train. It didn’t take her long to spin the carousel and find the picture to make her request and out the train popped from behind my back!
The furniture we had posted has been sold!
Merry Christmas from Tom 🎅🏻🎄
Santa practice is serious work 😉

Fine Motor Arts and Crafts in Vision Class Friday.
She got her “laundry” proudly folded and then enjoyed creating a reindeer.
A fun way to work on oral-motor, breathe control and vision skills.
After 18 months with us, he’ll be doing a Home Program in the new year. It’s been a pleasure to help him along his journey and watch him grow!

His Story:
While all seemed to be going well after his birth by 6 months of age parents were concerned with his delay in gross motor skills, after a few more months of discussing their concerns with pediatricians he started receiving Physical Therapy.
His parents heard about the Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development through friends and decided to call for an evaluation to see if any therapies at the Center could benefit him. During his evaluation at the Rehabilitation Center he was alert, made meaningful sounds but couldn’t say any words. He disliked belly time so never crawled (belly) but did roll and did a back scoot to get to where he wanted.
After an 8 Week Intensive Program (attending 3 days a week) he showed significant improvements in upper and lower body strength. He could crawl (belly) assisted with staff, seemed to have more strength in his legs and trunk control. He started saying words and after a few more weeks started putting 2-3 words together to make a sentence.
It’s been 6 months since he first started attending the Rehabilitation Center. He is walking, can stack blocks, tell you all the animal sounds you’re willing to ask him, enjoys interacting with the other young clients at the Rehabilitation Center.
We know this little guy will continue to make huge progress while attending our facility.

Sally Flatter was part of our Center Family as our secretary/bookkeeper for over 30 years. She passed away 11/30/2022.
Here is her Holiday Greeting from 2002:
It is once again the Holiday Season! As I think back 32 years ago when we first started a home program with Traci, it is unbelievable so many years have passed. What an adventure it has been!
We first traveled to Cincinnati for evaluations where we met Chuck Burhns. We would return home and do a home program which consisted of 5-6 hours of therapy a day-the first year it was 7 days a week-and then we scaled back to 6 days and eventually 5 days a week. Our kitchen was unusually furnished with a brachiation ladder and a patterning table as part of the furnishings. We had 4 volunteers from a ladies church group in the morning and 4 high school girls in the afternoon who came and assisted with therapy. We did a home program for 3 years.
I first visited the Center when it was still in the basement of St Paul’s Church and again about a year later when we made the decision to attend the Center. My son was placed in pre-school and Traci and I traveled 5 days a week (from Greenville) and spent from 8-3 doing program alongside many other mothers who were amazing. The support and care felt from these mothers as well as Ruth and Gloria (co/founders) was immediately uplifting. I will never forget the families we met as we shared an “opportunity” and a special bond. Traci and I have been at the Center now for 29 years. Our second home! We have made lifelong friendships and met some of the most wonderful, caring, giving, loving people there can be on this earth. Angels in disguise!
I miss Gloria, her smile and friendship. I treasure the time I spend with Ruth. These two ladies together created a loving, supportive rehab facility unmatched in its ability to restore hope and allow brain injured children and adults reach their highest potential.
We are blessed with a truly wonderful evaluator in Chuck Burhns. So many years of experience in this field, and the Center’s clients and staff reap the benefits of all that knowledge. A truly kind and caring individual who loves what he does. Through the years so many wonderful people have passed through our lives and it has been a joy to keep such company. Hopefully with the establishment of a new facility many more people will receive the love, support and hope they need too.
Happy Holidays and God Bless!
Sally and Traci Flatter
Yesterday: Everyone hard at work.

His Story told by his parents:
Prenatal information identifies a healthy pregnancy. During the delivery; the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and his color was blue/purple. Review of early mobility indicates: crawled around 4-6 months of age and was creeping and walking around the age of one.
When he was 2 years old he was brought to the Rehabilitation Center for an Evaluation as parents were concerned with his speech delay. Because of his difficulty telling parents his needs/wants, he does a lot of yelling. This usually occurs during meal time while he’s attempting to communicate food request.
He began attending the Rehabilitation Center 3 days a week for Neurological Program along with Neuroeducational Class twice a week. After 4 weeks of attending the Center, parents are amazed how his language is developing. Now he is putting 2-3 word sentences together to express his needs/wants. While he’s working on his Neurological Program with the staff, he says their names which not only put a smile on his face but all those assisting him.
His 8 week grant is almost finished. He went from an interest level of mere seconds before he pushed items off his tray, to offering his arm for hand-over-hand assistance to THIS the last few sessions!

Ok, so pegs wouldn’t be my suggested course of action but she had one in her mouth and I acted on a whim under careful supervision. Trying peanut butter has not gone well - until TODAY! She cautiously tried it, decided it was ok and I transferred it to an orange spoon and SUCCESS! Never give up HOPE!
