πŸ–€ Remembering Lives Lost to Overdoses on Black Balloon Day πŸ–€

Today, March 6th, we observe Black Balloon Day, a day of remembrance and awareness for those we've lost to drug overdoses. It's a time to honor friends, family, and loved ones who have tragically passed away too soon.

Why Black Balloons?

Black balloons symbolize the loss and grief that accompany overdose deaths. Displaying a black balloon is a powerful way to show solidarity, support survivors, and remember the lives that have been lost.

Today, let's stand together in memory of those we've lost and commit to action that can prevent future tragedies. Your voice, your story, and your actions can make a difference.

Research over nearly three decades demonstrates that Syringe Service Programs (SSPs) are a safe and effective public health approach to reduce the harms associated with drug use.
In Arizona, SSPs became legal in 2021 with the passing of SB1250. Several organizations, including Sonoran Prevention Works, Southwest Recovery Alliance, Shot in the Dark, The Sidewalk Project, and Feed Phoenix, operate SSPs in Maricopa County, with additional programs available throughout the state.

Naloxone is an FDA-approved medication designed to quickly reverse opioid overdoses. As an opioid antagonist, it binds to opioid receptors, reversing and blocking the effects of opioids.

With over five Arizonans dying every day from opioid overdoses, it's crucial that we educate ourselves about opioid overdose and carry naloxone to save lives.

Naloxone can be purchased over-the-counter or acquired for free through various organizations. Sonoran Prevention Works (), the largest distributor of community naloxone in the country, is based in Arizona and offers naloxone for free to the public.

For more information about naloxone, including where to obtain free naloxone, please visit the following website: https://spwaz.org/arizonanaloxone/

Harm reduction has become increasingly vital with over 100,000 drug-involved overdose deaths occurring in 2022 alone.

Harm reduction and harm reduction strategies currently stand as a key component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Overdose Prevention Strategy.

Throughout February, we will be digging deeper into harm reduction strategies that have been proven to reduce harm associated with drug use.
