Greetings Chavez Parents,

The NWEA is a computerized test that measures your child’s academic progress and growth over time. This assessment will be conducted three times per year for Math, Reading, and Language so that teachers can utilize the data to provide personalized and targeted instruction and interventions that are best for your student. Please make sure your child is well-rested the night before and eats a good breakfast!

Robert Grant

Dear Cesar Chavez Families,

It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news about the passing of Desiree Rivas. Desiree was a beloved member of our student body and an active member of our spirit line. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Desiree passed away after being the victim of a senseless act of violence this past weekend. She loved her peers and was a compassionate and caring member of our student community.

At this time, we share our love, support, and sympathy with Desiree's family and friends.

Anytime we lose a member of the Chavez family, it is heartbreaking and has far-reaching implications. In the coming days and weeks, you may feel like your student or a member of the Chavez community may need additional support. If you think your child needs extra support, please contact our campus administration or school counselor to identify someone who can assist.

Detectives are still looking for a suspect. Anyone with information can contact the Phoenix Police Department, or Silent Witness (480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish).

This is who we are. How fitting that on Cesar Chavez holiday 15 AMAZING Cesar Chavez students and Counselor Ms. Adriana Toles spent the day at Rogers Ranch Elementary for Courage Retreat. They chose to help others and give back to the community…on a non school day. We are truly raising Champions in the honor of Cesar Chavez, today, and every day.

Champion Families,

This morning, a precautionary evacuation took place when two campus alarm systems activated. All students and staff are safe, and at no time was anyone in danger. As you may know, we are in the process of updating our current alarm system. Because of this, we are experiencing accidental fire alarms at times. We understand that false alarms and evacuations are frustrating for Chavez students, staff, and parents, but we must investigate all alarms to ensure the safety of all those we serve.

During one of the evacuations, our staff members shared that they smelled gas. In response, we immediately contacted the Phoenix Fire Department, who discovered a gas leak in the community next to our campus. The leak was immediately addressed, and all students returned to class.

Chavez will operate on a regular bell schedule, and this incident will not impact afternoon dismissal.

Safety will always be our top priority, and we appreciate your patience and trust in Cesar Chavez High School.
