ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is facilitating global connections with future educators in Morocco and the United States through the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative. As part of the initiative, student teams from Arizona State University and other universities visit local schools and programs, sharing what they learn about disability inclusion approaches.

Recently, one team of students from The University of Mississippi - Ole Miss worked on an arts and crafts project with elementary school students who have a range of support needs. They observed the importance of working on activities that allow for participants to engage at their own paces and comfort levels. “Being able to interact with the students really opened my eyes to see how incredible students with different disabilities are,” said Evalena Russell, of the University of Mississippi (BA, Elementary Education, ’26).

The Virtual Exchange Initiative supports mutual discovery, shared learning, and local action to address the global challenge of disability inclusion as the participating students prepare to become classroom teachers. Supporting these kinds of national and global collaborations is important to MLFTC, which strives to develop and sustain collaborative networks and mutually transformative partnerships across geographic, cultural and disciplinary boundaries. The program is supported by the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative, a U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs program administered by the Aspen Institute, The Stevens Initiative Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State
