Help us congratulate three PSJA ISD leaders who will be assuming new roles this 2021-2022 School Year!
Luis Villarreal is the new Principal at PSJA Buell Central DAEP (Buell Green Inc.). His leadership and support for students made him the ideal candidate to continue to provide students the support they need to be successful in school and in life. A PSJA graduate, he has served the district for 30 years in numerous leadership capacities, more recently as Principal at Kennedy Middle School, a school with seven academic distinctions. He is excited to start this new chapter, supporting at-risk youth in our community.
Angelita Hernandez Gutierrez has been named the new Principal at John Doedyns Elementary in San Juan. With 28 years in the field of education at PSJA ISD, and a proud PSJA graduate, she plans to continue her mission of increasing the academic opportunities and achievements of all PSJA students. She previously served as Dean of Instruction at PSJA Early College High School.
Abram Estrada, also a PSJA graduate, has been named Principal at Kennedy Middle School in Pharr. He plans to continue the excellence in education established by his predecessors, and great team of teachers and staff. Prior to this opportunity, he was an Assistant Principal at PSJA Southwest Early College High School. He is excited to continue working with Future Javelinas in this new role.
"We congratulate these amazing leaders for taking on these new roles with excitement and humility to serve our PSJA families," said PSJA ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. "We are confident they will continue the legacy of excellence at PSJA ISD."
Virtual Meet & Greets for campus staff and parents will be scheduled in the next few days.
For District Secondary Teacher of the Year Joel Cavazos, teaching means going above and beyond to inspire his students to keep pushing forward.
"As teachers we are more than educators in a classroom or behind the screen...we are counselors, advocates, artists, leaders and for some students and families, we are the glue that holds it all together," said Cavazos who teaches at Buell Green Inc..
Today, our PSJA School Board held in-person recognitions again and welcomed our 5A UIL Film and One-Act Play State Champions PSJA Southwest Theatre, track State recognized athlete Wiliams Macias from PSJA Memorial Early College High School and our 2021 District Teachers of the Year Mrs. Perla De Leon from Marcia R. Garza Elementary and Mr. Joel Cavazos from Buell Green Inc.

Our students continue to engage in project-based learning from home through mycology kits that allow them to grow and sell gourmet mushrooms to local restaurants.
According to PSJA Buell Green Inc. Central DAEP Principal Mario Bracamontes, these are part of the campus efforts to continue to engage and inspire students during distance learning. A total of 15 mycology kits were donated by South Texas Mushrooms, a local farm owned by PSJA Buell Engineering Teacher Alvaro Gurrola.
As a way to engage students taking his Principles of Applied Engineering class, Gurrola decided to donate these kits consisting of mycelium, gloves, spray bottle, masks and a journal to track their progress.
“I wanted to spark my students’ curiosity and challenge them to think of different ways of doing things as well as helping their community,” said Gurrola who was first inspired to start a mushroom farm in order to find natural ailments to help his father as he battled cancer. “My class is about coming up with new ideas and approaches to solve problems.”
