Expert on virtual reality believes its higher ed impacts are still developing
This interview with Jeremy Bailenson on VR in higher education hints at the work ahead. We've used the field trip model here at Oxford College of Emory University in Art History, German, and soon Geology courses.

It's that time of year again! We're looking forward to seeing all the students on campus tomorrow morning, but we know how much has to happen before that first day of class. Let us know how we can help with your Canvas course, classroom technology, and any projects you may be thinking about. See you around the quad!

On Tuesday we had the privilege of presenting our work on Virtual Reality in the Humanities at an EDUCAUSE Learning Initiatives (ELI) virtual conference. Thank you, Tasha Dobbin-Bennett and Lisa Ward for their continued efforts in this trail-blazing technology. The presentation was well-received and put Oxford College on the stage with MIT, Brown, and Penn State.

As many of you know, in the fall the university began piloting a plagiarism detection tool called Unicheck within Canvas. If you are using Unicheck and a student submission has a high similarity score with another document in our institutional library (a database of Oxford/Emory student work that has been run through the application), here are some important issues to keep in mind:
• To protect student privacy, plagiarism detection software won’t allow faculty access to the “source” document with which your student’s submission matched. You will only see the title of the source document. If that title reveals anything about the student—last name, for example—please keep this information confidential.
• No one in Academic Technology or IT on either campus can communicate with faculty about the source document. Honor Council will make the appropriate request to retrieve that document and determine further action.
If you have questions about how to set up Unicheck, need help interpreting its originality report, or are curious about best practices for using plagiarism detection software in general, please contact Lisa Ward ([email protected]) in Academic Technology.

We are currently experiencing a slowdown of Canvas and are working with the vendor to correct the issue. At this time logging in is possible, but Canvas times out when trying to enter courses. We noticed this around 9:30 this morning.

Creating Big Blue Button Conferences: Canvas Training - Public Course
Good morning Oxford Faculty!
With today’s weather hampering our first day of classes we wanted you to know that you have an option available to help ease the disruption. Through the Conferences tab in Canvas, you can record a lecture, talk through your syllabus, or let your students know what to expect in their up-coming Spring course. The links below can help guide you, but we are available to help if you have questions! Email us directly or at [email protected] if you run into trouble.
What is the Conferences Tab Used for? (also called BigBlueButton)
- Instructors may stream lectures (audio, PC Screen) directly through Canvas
- Recordings are kept only for two weeks
What is required?
- A computer with high-speed internet connection and microphone
- The “Conferences” link in your Canvas course should be activated
- Headset with microphone works best, if available

EDUCAUSE Research Snapshot
This infographic summarizes the data collected from 11,141 faculty members and 35,760 students from over 100 institutions. One Academic Tech focus this spring is to increase communication about how specific technologies can benefit our students. Our previous projects include metrics to measure outcomes, and we want to use that data to help you make the best decisions for your courses. Do you see anything surprising about the data that you think may, or may not, apply to Oxford?

The Pierce classrooms are light-filled, versatile, and ready for the Spring semester. If you're teaching in one of these rooms in the upcoming term, let us show you the new space. Schedule a 15-minute walk through of your new classroom before the semester begins by emailing anyone on the Academic Tech team. We're looking forward to seeing you back on campus very soon!

Hi, everyone! A quick Canvas tip: make sure to enter a zero into your gradebook for missed assignments. If you don't enter anything and there's a dash in your gradebook column, that assignment just gets skipped over and your total won't be correct. Happy grading, folks!

Hi, all. We'll be sending something around via EaglePost a bit later in the semester, but we have a message for our early birds now. If you see your Spring course shells on Canvas, don't add anyone to them at the moment; doing so might cause an issue that will sadden our Canvas admins. Thanks for your help!
