Presenting another Nicaragua alumni - Meredith ('17-'18)! Read on to hear some silly memories as well as a life update from a beloved alumni! 🌟😍

"We used to play true American in the living room on weekends. The room was just too well configured to not take advantage of it! Remembering the rules was so hard but it always kept us laughing"

"Since coming back to the states I’ve gotten my masters in global development from Harvard and I still use my Spanish through volunteer work and part time roles. Ultimately I’m looking to pivot back to community development full time, Manna solidified for me that that’s where my true passion is!"

We're so grateful for our alumni who keep Manna's mission going throughout the whole world. Are you a Manna alumni? We'd love to talk! DM us to be featured and help us teach incoming groups of Manna PDs and PCs about the Manna experience. 💙

(Re)introducing Vanessa! 🌟Read some words from the former staff member in Chillos and everlasting friend of Manna, about her experiences working with international volunteers in her home country!

“Without a doubt, what I was most proud of having been a staff member was seeing the growth of the volunteers. Since they arrived as one person and left as another, seeing how they challenged themselves and left their comfort zones to do unique things is something incredible. Becoming a guide and support during their experience has been very rewarding.”

As we continue with our celebration of 20 years, we want to remember someone who was on site a bit more recently - Brecker! Brecker was a Program Director in Spring of 2023 and was one of the first Manna people on site in Shandia in May.

Read below a bit about Brecker's memories of Chillos, Manna, and what he's up to now. If you are able to help contribute to another 20 years of impact, please help out our communities in the link in the bio!

"My favorite program had to have been the music program I did at Guangopolo. It was so fun to be able to create a new program from the ground up and leverage my musical background to get the seniors' minds and bodies moving... The participants were so earnest and invested in the program, and they were some of the most gracious and sweet people I've ever had the privilege of interacting with."

"My time in the Amazon also led me to receive an invitation to the Public Forum of the World Trade Organization in Geneva on behalf of my university. In Geneva, I attended over a dozen panels with diplomatic, business, nonprofit, and academic leaders from around the world discussing issues of sustainability in trade. I even attended a panel focused on trade sustainability in the Amazon, which was an incredible opportunity to network and share some of my experiences from Shandia. Furthermore, the Ecuadorian Mission to the WTO hosted a reception where I spoke with Jose Valencia, the Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Daniel Legarda, the Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Trade (who both recognized me as an "honorary Ecuadorian")."

As part of our celebration of 20 years of impact, we want to introduce you to Lupe, a vital part of the Manna family and a dedicated healthcare advocate in Cedro Galan, Nicaragua. Through her work, Lupe has significantly improved healthcare access and affordability in her community. 🌍🙌🏽 We are proud of the work she continues to do in her community!

Please help Manna continue to offer solutions to systemic challenges in communities with low access to healthcare at the link in our bio! And continue reading to learn more about Lupe:

EN: Happy Birthday, Manna!
I'm Lupe from Cedro Galán, Nicaragua. It's my pleasure to wish the greatest success and many blessings to Manna Project, which is celebrating 20 years of noble work.

I was part of this huge project, which I remember with nostalgia, but also much love and gratitude. Manna positively changed my life. My first involvement was in women's exercise classes, which I adored. I also attended English classes and was part of the clinic's community advisory board.

I lived unforgettable experiences. When I opened the doors of my home and my heart to each Manna volunteer, it was giving myself an opportunity. I recorded beautiful memories in my mind which I keep as an incalculable treasure. Manna folks, I love and remember you dearly. As I always told you, in Cedro Galán you have a home and a family that awaits you with open arms. To the new volunteers, I encourage you to keep going with a firm step, leaving your mark in every place and person you meet.

As we ring in the New Year, meet Enrique Cerda—a true community champion embodying Manna's mission! 🌟 Let's take a cue from Enrique's dedication, using our resolutions not just for personal goals but as a guide to uplift our community. Manna's essence as a community-building operation is reflected in Enrique's commitment, urging us to make resolutions that contribute to the well-being of both individuals and the communities we call home! Yupaychani, Enrique!

For communities that have faced the highest rates of poverty and violence in the country, collaboration is key. Manna is on a journey alongside the communities of the Amazon Rainforest, recognizing that economic livelihood, health, and education are intertwined -- and cultural! Together, we're reshaping the narrative, co-creating sustainable initiatives that address each individual community and their individual challenges and strengths.

A few examples of programs that build paths to better tomorrows:

👩‍🎓English education programs fosters collaboration with international environmentalists, allowing sustainable ecotourism to be claimed once again by the owners and stewards of this land.

🍳Nutrition programs that empower communities with teachings on sustainable nutrition for children, chickens for protein and healthy fats, and much more.

Join the movement – it's not about saving, but collaborating and learning from each other. Together, we're building a future where the Amazon thrives on its own terms. 🌿🤝

Today's alumni spotlight throws it all the way back to the beginning: think Nicaragua 2004 to the founders of Manna and let us introduce you to Luke Putnam, co-founder and current surgeon in California! Read below to let Luke tell you about Manna way back when and the chispa that led to 20 years of impact!

If you can contribute to another 20 years of impact, please follow the link in bio 👆 or consider buying a t-shirt designed by a Kichwa designer to support programs in rural communities.

"So, so many fond memories despite nearly 20 years of separation. From spending a ton of time at the Manna house with our Manna family including our chickens and our rottweiler, Sidney, to time in Cedro Galan with Yessenia and Raquelita, to time in Chiquilistagua with the Augusts and the amazing community of friends there. Not to mention building relationships with Esmeralda and the folks in La Chureca. Such a rich experience. My time there highlighted more than anything else the importance of community, and in particular relationships, and how they can (and should) enrich everyone's lives, oftentimes for years to come even if relatively short-lived. Just the act of spending time together and not even necessarily ‘serving’ one another is so important and oftentimes overlooked. All the programs are great, but the most lasting impact Manna and each of us makes at our sites is the relationships with the locals and with the other manna folks.

I live in Los Angeles with my amazing wife, Kathryn, and our four boys. We live very close to extended family. I’m a surgeon at USC."
