We finished our first week by engaging in Discovery Group Seminars, painting a 4-square court with the middle school students and taking class photos.

These first two days were all about establishing the groundwork necessary for us to pursue radical growth for each member of our community.

Day 1 is in the books!

We had a GREAT first day of school and we’re so excited to welcome back our students.

Our Board Chair, Dr. Clara Walters met with our students and reminded them who we are: a school where joyful excellence is our daily expectation.

Can’t wait for Day 2.

The Five Words: Concern

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

Atticus Finch is the fictional father and lawyer in Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Despite not being the main character of the book, he has stood out for decades because of the way he quietly, but determinedly, sticks to his principles and to justice against prejudice and hate.

Atticus is a model of how one of our Five Words, Concern, can be embodied in our world. His commitment to understanding people, having empathy and putting others’ needs above his own desire for comfort and safety makes him an exemplar for our school.

The Five Principles: Destiny

“Each person is gifted with a unique potential that defines a destiny.”

Joseph Gauld was the founder of The Hyde School in Bath, ME, the school upon which CLFA is based. His entire life project was driven by the conviction that education is about helping each student figure out their unique contribution to the world and then living that out to the fullest. When this is accomplished, every person truly becomes a leader.

If this sounds too idealistic, Joe’s life bears out the truth in his words. Despite countless setbacks and a countercultural vision, Hyde grew into a network of schools and organizations that continues to set the standard for academically excellent, character focused education today.

At CFLA, we want each student to uncover their unique potential and have the courage and competencies to fulfill their destiny, just as Joe said, and just as Joe did.

The Five Words: Courage

“I had two options. One was to remain silent and wait to be killed. The other was to speak up and then be killed. I chose the second one. I decided to speak up.”

Developing courage is the cornerstone of CFLA’s approach to character education. We want every student to not only know what is right and be able to competently carry it out but to have the fortitude to do so against opposition.

Malala Yousafzai is one of our exemplars for her courageous stand against the Taliban in support of education for all. She was shot in 2012 by a Taliban gunman but the bullet failed to end her life or stop her advocacy.

At CFLA, our college preparatory academics and character based education is meant to cultivate leaders with the courage and conviction of Malala.

College Prep & Character Education in a Secure Small School Environment

We provide rigorous college preparatory academics in combination with after-school activities and family-based character education in an environment that changes attitudes and develops leaders. Serving grades 6-12, our students come to CFLA to find engaged teachers and administrators that care about not only their academic future, but also their personal needs. We believe that attitude and effort determine the difference between achievers and non-achievers with the same potential. We work closely with parents and families in our mission, believing that parents must also acquire the attitudes, skills, and knowledge to succeed in their roles and that family involvement is a major factor in student success.

CFLA is modeled after the highly successful Hyde Schools, which have been the national leaders in family-based character education for more than 45 years.
