The Effects of CBD on Multiple Sclerosis
Cannabinoids mimic a group of chemicals that occur naturally in the human body known as endocannabinoids. These chemicals govern memory, appetite, pain, moods, and communication between cells. MS is fundamentally a disease which destroys the ability of cells to communicate and transmit signals. This results in severe neuropathic pain for the patient. As a result, it is easy to see how viable CBD is for treating MS pain.
CBD is known as a phytocannabinoid, or a cannabinoid derived from a plant. It binds to cannabinoid receptors which are widespread throughout the body. The human body has two types of cannabinoid receptors:
1) CB1 receptors found mostly in the brain, but also in the lung, liver, and kidneys
2) CB2 receptors found mostly in the peripheral tissues of the immune system
CBD is so effective because it binds to these CB1 receptors. For example, CBD treats MS pain so well because it binds to CB1 receptors in the brain that control for the expression and sensation of pain. It is effective in treating an overactive bladder because it binds to CB1 receptors in the kidneys. CBD for Multiple Sclerosis Pain is so promising because of the widespread distribution of CB1 receptors all over the body.
Furthermore, treatment in the long term might be due to the presence of CB2 receptors in the immune system. Remember that MS is a disease of the immune system that causes the human body to attack its own neurons. The fact that CBD binds with CB2 receptors makes it highly likely that it is also effective in treating the long-term effects of MS.
The message is clear: CBD is useful in treating the symptoms of MS and has powerful additional benefits for the human brain and immune system. It is also a safe, natural, and effective alternative to the harsh side effects of more conventiona
Traditional MS Treatments and Their Side Effects
MS has no known cure. There are only treatments to try and manage the disease. Traditional treatments include:
Cortical steroids
Immunosuppressants
Interferons
Painkillers
The side effects from these various therapies include:
An increased risk of sickness or infections
Extreme fatigue and drowsiness
Pains and aches in the muscles or joints
Liver dysfunction
Diarrhea
Intoxication
Constipation
Serious irritation at the site of injection

CBD helping MS
Like many auto-immune disorders MS is hard to treat and no one treatment works for everyone. Not only does this disease present physical challenges but there are mental ramifications such as depression and hopelessness. However, current data suggests the cannabinoids like those found in Full spectrum CBD can suppress neuroinflammation and encourage healthy gut flora not to mention help reduce MS related pain response and depression.
We’ve worked with several clients suffering from MS over the past 10 years each at different stages of the disease. One client in particular shared her story with us and we’d like to bring it to you. When we began to work with her, she was 8 years into her diagnoses. Unable to walk without a cane or arm crutches, lesions covered 80% of her brain, her only relief came from receiving intense chemical treatments every few weeks. These treatments had their own consequences and she was declining rapidly. We partnered with physicians and researched published studies to find what treatments we can offer to find some relief for her and give her quality of life back or at least maintain it from getting worse. The course of treatment with the most positive results included high doses of Full Spectrum CBD (for pain, inflammation and gut health), water soluble Vitamin D w/K (to boost immune system) and Light therapy (to increase blood flow).
After just 6 months her doctors reported a significant decrease of lesions on her brain. She was walking on her own with no cane or crutches. She and her husband began to share a bed again and she no longer needed anxiety medication. Since her story, there have been so many more that have followed. We learn more every day about the benefits of cannabinoids and how our body’s endocannabinoid system works. MS and CBD
Research is also finding a positive connection with CBD for MS patients. CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of the many non-psychoactive cannabinoids found within the h**p plant that has been linked to numerous health benefits.
Harvard shares that these benefits appear to include reduction of epileptic seizures, lower levels of anxiety, improved sleep, and relief from chronic pain. Science suggests that it may help with MS as well.
As an example, in a 2018 study published in Frontiers in Neurology, the authors state that, while CBD and its impact on MS is still being investigated, individuals with MS who use CBD with a 1-to-1 ratio of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive part of the ma*****na plant) have reported both reduced muscle spasticity and reduced muscular pain.
Another study, this one in the journal the Neurobiology of Disease, explains that CBD can potentially help individuals diagnosed with MS due to its “potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.”
Studies show…
One 2008 review Trusted Source assessed just how effective CBD works to alleviate chronic pain. The analysis looked at research carried out between the late 1980s and the year 2007. Based on such reviews, investigators determined CBD for inflammation had been effective in all-around pain management with no negative side effects. They also recognized that CBD was helpful in dealing with sleeping disorders associated with persistent pain.
CBD and MS
Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive component of cannabis, is known to exhibit both anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects against known and suspected autoimmune diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Alzheimer’s disease.
New research from the Department of Pathology in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia, published last week in Frontiers in Immunology studied the treatment of murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) with CBD oil in order to characterize the previously unknown biochemical mechanisms through which CBD inhibits MS-like symptoms.
The research team induced EAE in groups of female mice using the peptide MOG35-55 as an antigen. These mice were then treated with either CBD or a control vehicle once the first EAE symptoms were observed. The progression of disease was tracked using clinical scores associated with different symptom expressions. The scores were measured on a scale of 0 to 6, representing the full range of observable symptoms from no clinical signs all the way to death. The mean score for each group of mice was calculated daily and the scores for CBD treated mice (EAE-CBD) and the control group treated with the vehicle (EAE-VEH) were compared to assess the objective effectiveness of CBD treatment.
The EAE-VEH mice developed EAE at a steady rate, with a maximum mean clinical score of 4.1 over the course of the study. A clinical score of 4 in this study corresponds to a state of tetraparalysis. The EAE-CBD mice experienced a slower onset of symptoms, and at their peak the mean clinical score of symptoms was 2.2, which indicates only partial paralysis of the hind limbs.
With confirmation that CBD treatment does have a clear effect on EAE, the researchers carried out a number of in vivo and ex vivo tests to try to pinpoint exactly what biochemical mechanisms were responsible for the effectiveness of the treatment.
