Aspire is the Bay Area’s leader in effective supplemental education programming. We empower our students to become independent, active learners.
Then we invite them to be trained in social-emotional skills and mentor younger students in literacy. Aspire Education Project is the Bay Area’s leader in thoughtful, effective education programming. Dedicated to providing equitable access to academic support, our programs fall into three categories:
-One-on-one academic tutoring and test prep by uniquely qualified educators
-Academic partnership
Operating as usual
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dixie Lewis. Dixie volunteered as a youth mentor with Community Reading Buddies for 5 summers, from 2015-2019. She touched the hearts and minds of the elementary school students she compassionately mentored in literacy. Our hearts go out to Dixie’s family and friends during this tragic time.
This is a story about Oakland, early education, and you.
We’re so excited to announce that, for the first time in CRB history, we’re organizing an online version of the program during the school year! We’re taking sign ups now for volunteers who can make a regular commitment to the program this fall. Pass it on!

Luke says:
When I was younger, I absolutely loved "Luke Goes to Bat" by Rachel Isadora. It inspired my love of sports at an early age while also giving me a glimpse into the legacy the legendary Jackie Robinson left behind.
To all the Buddies out there, I really miss you all. Whether it was refereeing a playground basketball game or reading Dr. Seuss or playing with stuffed animals, you all were so fun and great to be around and work with. Stay safe during these unprecedented times, and remember, there's nothing better than curling up at home with a good book.

Our Youth Mentors are sending their messages of support to their Buddies!
Emma says:
I love "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" so much because of the fun and silly nature of the story.
I hope all the Buddies are safe at home and I miss acting out the different parts of the story with them!
Oakland Literacy Coalition
We're showing love to Oakland students all week with Oakland Literacy Coalition's campaign!
Allison says:
"The Rainbow Fish" was one of my favorite books as a young reader because it has a strong and lovely message that I still believe in today: sharing makes us happy! At first, the Rainbow Fish doesn't share his pretty scales but soon that makes him feel lonely. Once he starts sharing with others, Rainbow Fish sees how happy it makes them and this makes him feel happy, too! Sometimes when I feel lonely, I know that sharing together will make everyone feel better.
Happy reading!
This week, we're participating in Oakland Literacy Coalition's Facebook campaign to show support for young Oakland students!
Genni says:
I love the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" because it's a fun way to learn the alphabet with great rhymes and funny sounds.
The thing I miss most about being in Oakland schools is seeing all of the smiles and excitement from students when their Reading Buddy is coming to read and play with them! I hope we will all get to see each other again soon!
Books, books, books! These brand new books were sitting in our storage for months, waiting to go to their new homes. We had 273 books meant for giveaways at our Family Reading Night events in the spring. With the pandemic closing schools and limiting group gatherings, we sadly had to cancel our events for the rest of the school year. Fortunately, today we were able to give the books to our partners at Oakland Literacy Coalition for distribution to OUSD families! Now, when young families pick up their weekly meals from meal distribution sites, they’ll also get some books to take home and share. That’s the power of the Oakland education community!
We know that everyone is living in uncertain times right now. And while we are preparing for the possibility that CRB will need to be postponed or cancelled in 2020, we are also preparing for an outcome where we can still provide educational support to our youngest students this summer.
Children’s early years are critical for language and literacy development, and a lack of support has been shown to cause long-term learning effects. With schools closed for in-class learning for the remainder of the school year, summer will be critical for making up this learning loss.
If you are interested in volunteering with us this summer, please sign up via our bio link! You can make a difference during this unprecedented time.
Aspire in the Community
SHE CAN's mission is to equip and empower young women from post-conflict countries to become leaders who change their nation. Since its founding in 2011, 64 low-income women have won full-ride scholarships to U.S. universities, with 19 graduates emerging leaders in their fields.
Aspire Education Project and SHE-CAN have been partners since 2015. Aspire facilitates an online test prep class with the candidates of the SHE-CAN program in Cambodia to help them with their college entrance exams.
Our community partnerships allow us to reach more students and work towards our goal to give all students access to educational resources.
