Happy Labor Day from all of us at JSA! We are grateful for the many contributions made by the millions of American workers to this great country.

We are excited to announce our 2022-2023 Council of Governors (CoG)! The CoG is composed of the Governors of all 10 JSA states. They lead their states in planning, organizing, and their vision guides the direction of JSA, benefiting all JSA members along the way.
One Governor is voted as the Chair of the CoG, while another serves as CoG’s representative to the JSA Board of Directors. One new position has been integrated into this structure: the Vice Chair, who will assist the Chair in any organizational means.

Thank you to the 2021-2022 CoG for all they have done during the difficult COVID complications and transitions of last year.

VOTE FOR JSA TO BE IN @sxswedu 2023

We are excited to announce that the Council of Governors has come together to submit a proposal for the SXSW EDU Conference for the second year in a row!

Their presentation entitled “Changing Activism: How Gen Z is Taking Action” focuses on the importance of student-based community networks to foster spaces for progressive and inclusive discussions, how social media can bring rise to hyper-polarization and can create stagnant participation within activism movements, and utilizing effective communication in a non-partisan context to end intense political divide created by performative activism.

But we need your help! A significant component of how a SXSW proposal gets selected is online votes, meaning you can play a crucial role in our success! Voting is free and easy.

We are thrilled to share that JSA has returned to in-person fundraising events after a two-year hiatus. We held our first gala since February 2020 in Washington, D.C., on July 29. It was an exceptional evening with a student-moderated panel discussion on the war in Ukraine.

Thank you to our incredible speakers, Frank Langfitt with NPR London Office, Fiona Hill with The Brookings Institution, and Fiona Donovan with World Central Kitchen. Our student moderators, Keira P. (former governor of SoCal) and Aneetej A. (former governor of Ohio River Valley), did a fantastic job.

This event was made possible by our generous sponsors: Sterling Foundation Management LLC, Rachel Kaganoff Stern, Anonymous, Bonnie & Dan Germain, Doug Wertheimer, Jennifer & Abe Friedman, Larry Klane, TIAA, Vishal Goradia, Former SoCal Governors, Jennifer Anastasoff, Karyn Harrington, Klein/Johnson Group, and Tom Warden.

Stay tuned for our next gala!

Our fiscal year is coming to a close (Sept. 30), and we need your help to reach our fundraising goal. Your gift will help shape the next generation of civic leaders and strengthen our democracy. Will you join us? Donate today at https://jsa.org/!

Our Story

The Junior State of America (JSA) was created by and for young people. On more than 400 high school campuses across the country, JSA Chapters provide safe spaces for students interested in politics and government, foreign affairs, education, and law to practice democracy.

Since its founding in 1934, more than 500,000 student members have become active and informed citizens through JSA. JSA’s unique experiential learning model allows students to gain important leadership skills by emphasizing action, problem-solving, and planning.

Organized on a national, state and local level, JSA Chapters collectively form regions that coordinate activities and events. The regions also form states that are led by a student leader who is elected by fellow JSA peers as governor to plan and execute conventions, conferences and political-awareness events. JSA States host three large overnight conventions a year, and the national level of general program operations.

JSA allows for an exchange of ideas through stimulating student debates, thought talks, problem solving and a variety of simulations. JSA provides a wonderful chance to meet and make friends with scores of other bright, involved students who have similar interests. It’s an experience that no young person would want to miss.

Learn how to start a chapter and bring JSA to your school.
