Come join the fun at the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy - Chicago Summer Heat Drum Retreat August 26-28, 2022!

All classes will be taught by the Director of TTMDA-Chicago, Senior Certified Instructor, M. Taylor. Almost all the classes will be mixed level, as djembe music works well with beginners and advanced folks in the same room, as most rhythms have aspects that can challenge both at once.

Some of the stuff we’ll cover: basic rhythms, soloing, echauffments, dunun variations, some songs, Level System breaks, dununba rhythms, maybe even some Zaouli – I welcome requests – please send those along with your registration!

Michael Taylor, more commonly known simply as ‘Taylor’ is biracial and has been teaching, performing, and recording West African percussion since 1994. Also the owner and driving force behind Holy Goat Percussion, he imports, sells and repairs West African drums, teaches, is a Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy Senior Certified Instructor and is the director of the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy – Chicago, School of Percussion. His main instruments are the djembe, dunun and Malinke flute, but he plays a wide assortment of other drums including bugaraboo, congas, frame drum, bongos, and doumbek.

“As a teacher, I combine a broad range of experience in theater, music, communications, and philosophy with knowledge and respect for the traditions of West Africa and the cognitive effects of rhythm. I encourage my students to explore both the traditional rhythms and their individual expression on the drum.”

Taylor teaches djembe and dunun both privately (virtual and in-person) and offers classes at locations throughout the Chicago area. Check the schedule for a class near you.
