"Where Excellence is Our Standard"
Goodwin Elementary is a neighborhood school that has been serving North Charleston children since 1967. We have an ethnically diverse population of 688 students in grades Child Development through the 5th grade, with 68% of the population black, 27% Hispanic and 5% white. Instructional programs include special education services, First Grade Academy, Gifted and Talented, ESOL, art, computer, music, guidance, P.E. and regular intervention groups with associate teachers for students needing assistance in all grade levels. Students have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities including: Art Club, Kickin’ Keyboards, WBGS News Show, Tennis team, Recycling Team, and Fit Club. Goodwin is a Links to Success School. In the 2012-2012 school year we received the Palmetto Silver Award and an overall school rating of “B.” We are excited to announce that Goodwin Elementary was selected as a pilot school for Personalized Learning and we have twelve classrooms participating in this program. Personalized Learning is an approach that combines best teaching practices, collaborative and cooperative learning and project-based learning while integrating all the technology resources (computers, iPads and Web Tools) available. This model provides an individualized learning environment to help ensure the success of every student. All students at Goodwin have the opportunity to use iPads in their classrooms. Our campus participates in CATCH: Coordinated Approach to Child Health. Students learn healthy eating habits and receive fresh vegetable and fruits snacks twice a week. We have a Fit Room where classes can combine exercise with learning. Goodwin offers ESOL and GED classes for parents and we are proud to be partnering with Communities in Schools this year. At Goodwin Elementary, excellence is indeed our standard!
Mission: The mission of Goodwin Elementary is working in partnership with students, families, the workplace, and community, to prepare all students to be high achievers and responsible caring citizens by providing a nurturing environment that promotes self-esteem, respect for others and a passion for learning.
