This article hasn't been posted yet on The Tribal Tribune so I figured I would take the liberty of posting it myself. I have been so fortunate to come all four years of high school and hope to find an event just like this in college. Hope you guys enjoy! The Walk For Autism Article: At the Walk for Autism April 13, Cindy Vance directs her son, Jeffrey Sheriff towards the camera. She points at the photographer, asking,“Why, isn’t she decent?” The young man focuses in on the lens and the person behind it. He responds joyously, “ Why, she decent, she’s handsome, she’s mighty handsome.” The son’s silliness became affectionate. The mother starts laughing uncontrollably at her son and he laughs back. Putting his arm directly around her waistline, she held her son close, smiling at families as they walk by. “The world could learn so much from Autistic person,” Vance said. “They just see the world a different way and how honored are we to be able to step into their world.” Families, supporters and volunteers stepped into an autistic persons world at Hampton Park for the annual walk. The Walk For Autism, as described by longtime director Kerianne Grace, was “a judgment free day” filled with many rainbows, floating balloons and play areas to engage all people in and out of the Autism community. The Walk’s mission is to support Autistic families by offsetting the cost of treatments and therapies while gaining public awareness about the diagnosis according to Walk for Autism Charleston. Money raised by the walk provides scholarship money for kids to go towards Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy-- a treatment that helps them overcome their developmental disabilities current volunteer Erin Pruitt said. ABA is a necessary treatment in the developmental process for people with Autism because, according to therapist Tara Gregori, it has been research-proven that there are individual benefits to most Autistic patients. Since ABA treatments are very flexible, they are effective to people on all different levels of the Autism spectrum. “For me, and Smith (my son),” Pruitt said, “if Smith had not done ABA therapy, he would not have had the language and some of his skills that he has. “It (ABA) can help with speech,” she added. “ You know, you take for granted what you learned what a cup was. You just pick it up in your environment. So through one-on-one therapy, and by saying ‘what is this cup’ repetition, repetition, that’s kind of how that worked out.” The event provided other therapy programs like Bach to Rocks music sensory development while leaving a good time for the kids among fairy princesses and firetrucks. Volunteers also engaged in meaningful conversations with parents about the joys of autistic children and some parents like, Vance mentioned how these kids are not a special needs child, they are special child that the world needs. Progressing through April, Autism Awareness month, the Walk for Autism community hopes for more awareness on developmental conditions like autism and that the support community continues to grow in years to come according to Tara Gregori. “[The goal is] to continue to provide funding for ABA therapy along with alternative therapies like music, horseback riding,” Pruitt said. “The walk has been an important part of the autism puzzle for over 17 years in the tri-county area.”
