Meet Israel, a transgender man and Learn4Life graduate. Israel was not comfortable with his body and struggled during his youth.
He is the youngest of five kids and lived in different Foster homes with his siblings until the age of twelve, when he moved into a group home. Israel had 14 different home placements and 12 different schools.
He didn’t do well in traditional schools and was really behind in credits but that did not keep him from graduating high school.
Come catch us at the market today in Park Circle! We can't wait to meet you!
At Learn4Life we offer more than a diploma. Learn4Life staff helps our students with life skills, parenting skills, and even career training. Students can receive extra counseling & mentoring, and our trauma-informed approach helps our students learn resiliency and how to cope with stress.
Nobody else is doing what we do, and we believe all students should have access to programs like ours.

One common is that our schools are free from accountability and oversight.
The truth is, Learn4Life Schools are held to tougher accountability standards than traditional public schools.
The difference is, if a traditional school fails to meet benchmarks, nothing happens. If we fail to meet similar standards, our schools can be closed down.
Charter School authorizers have strict oversight requirements, and our schools must be reauthorized every five (5) years.
On top of that, we are accountable to our enrolled students and their parents. Unlike the traditional public school system, we don't have the luxury of a pipeline of students who are required to enroll at our schools.
If we fail to meet our students' needs and expectations, they can and likely will enroll elsewhere.
Echo Carter was always a bright, happy and outgoing child, but when she got to junior high, she became the target of bullies.
“I was always a good student -- the problem was the social environment for me. Kids would bully me constantly and it got to the point where I was depressed, didn’t want to go to school and almost flunked 8th grade,” Echo said.
“The good news is that it led me to Learn4Life, where I could be myself again.”
Learn4Life quickly realized that in order to reach students’ heads, we needed to reach their hearts. So, we designed the Trauma-Resilient Educational Communities (TREC) Model which is based on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) science and protocols.
TREC is an active approach to understanding trauma. We do more than explain the effects of trauma and encourage understanding amongst our teachers, counselors and staff.
All of our employees are trained and receive credentials in the foundations of trauma-informed practices. Staff continue their training by completing a series of trainings on mindfulness and meditation, compassion fatigue and self-care, social restorative justice, and diversity inclusivity and anti-racism.
What is a nonclassroom-based (NCB) charter school? 🤔 ❓
First, what it is not? NCB does NOT mean online only. 🙅
In fact, only about ~1/3 of NCB charter schools are primarily or exclusively virtual. It does mean flexible scheduling where students attend their school site as often as they need.
What You May Not Know About Nonclassroom-based Schools - Learn4Life California legislators are constantly being swayed by the teachers’ unions to greatly limit nonclassroom-based (NCB) charter schools – yet it turns out that most politicians and parents don’t understand the NCB model. What is a nonclassroom-based charter school? First, what it is not. Nonclass...

One common myth is that graduation rates are much lower than in traditional schools.
The truth is, graduation rates are determined by looking at how students graduate within four (4) years of beginning high school.
What is fails to account for, is that many Learn4Life students enroll with us as much as 1.50 years behind in credits.
The average Learn4Life student is a 17-year old with barely enough credits to be considered a 10th-grader.
There is no way they will finish 2+ years of work in one year.
Learn4Life’s caring and attentive educators help build a personalized plan to get each student back on track.
So, while the graduation rate may *seem* lower, the fact is that 89% of students are successful and 45% actually end up pursuing college.
Studies show that students in schools with higher suspension rates were more likely to experience negative impacts on educational attainment and be arrested and incarcerated as adults.
Suspensions are not only a learning issue, but also an equity issue. Students of color are more likely to be suspended and, in turn, suffer lost learning days and other negative consequences.
Learn4Life schools reported a “very low” suspension rate of 0.2% in the 2019-20 school year compared to a “medium” suspension rate of 2.5% reported by all California schools and much lower than other Dashboard Alternative School Status (DASS) schools serving high-risk students at 4.2%.
