SITI Lab 2017 04/02/2018

2017 SITI Lab photos! This year's Lab featured work by graduates of our 2016-2017 Conservatory, including the companies Square One Collective, In the Water Theatre Company, and Shellscrape Theatre Company.

What do SITI Conservatory graduates do after finishing their time with SITI? Some of them form companies; some return to their home cities and countries to work; and some continue performing in New York. Many of our graduates apply to SITI Lab, a space grant and residency designed to support emerging ensemble theater makers.

Last fall, these graduates of our 2016-2017 Conservatory ensemble presented new works in the Zeisler studio for two nights only. All three plays developed through SITI Lab this year have received producing opportunities following the Lab at theaters in New York City and San Francisco. We're proud of our graduates and look forward to seeing what they do next!

You can learn more about the Conservatory and apply to join our 2018-2019 ensemble at www.siti.org/conservatory.

The Viewpoints Book The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that grew out of the postmodern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie, who broke down the two dominant issues performers deal with—space and time—into six categories. Since that time, directors Anne Bogart and Tina Land...

In 1992, Tadashi Suzuki co-founded SITI Company with Anne and many of the current company members. His book, Culture is the Body, is an incredible resource to dive deep into, especially if you're thinking of joining our family and training in the 2018-2019 Conservatory.

Culture is the Body "Mr. Suzuki's art seeks to reach audiences not through the intellect but through the senses and instincts."—New York Times"In my opinion, a 'cultured' society is one where the perceptive and expressive abilities of the human body are used to the full; where they provide the basic means of communic...

Thinking of applying for SITI Conservatory 2018-2019? We recommend reading Mary Overlie's new book: Standing in Space! Mary is the originator of the Viewpoints and an inspiring artist whose work continually inspires us. https://sixviewpoints.com/store/standing-in-space

Standing In Space: The Six Viewpoints Theory & Practice Softcover Mary Overlie created the Six Viewpoints as an answer to the question "What are dance and theater made of?" She sought out a technical language to discuss the artistic forms similar to that of the specific language used to describe painting. What followed was the development of a comprehens

Şiir Tilif talks about passion and ethical storytelling in this week's spotlight!

Each week, we spotlight the work of one of our SITI Conservatory artists. This week, we are happy to highlight Siir Tilif.

Speaking of a piece of art that impacted her, Siir writes, "Bouchra Khalili’s The Mapping Journey Project. A series of videos telling the stories of individuals who have been forced by political and economic circumstances to travel illegally. You only saw their hands drawing their journey on a map whilst telling their personal and at times heartbreaking stories in search for a better life. Their voices were heard. It was a strong, visually and conceptually beautiful piece of art. Genius storytelling that dealt with political and ethical issues. It was very moving and made a big impression on me."

You can read more of Siir's interview at http://siti.org/content/siti-conservatory-spotlight-siir-tilif. Please join us for ADAM & EVIE, May 11-13 at Dixon Place! Tickets are now available at www.siti.org/adamandevie.

Speaking of artistic experiences that have changed him or deeply affected his artistic practice, Tiago says, "It was moments with singing. I think to sing, as a kind of body in space, can be a very strong experience, especially if you are together and singing: putting the body in vibration."

Each week, SITI spotlights one of our SITI Conservatory artists. This week, we’re happy to highlight the work of Dante Belletti.
