We were so fortunate to host Brazilian guitarist, arranger, and composer Bruno Mangueira in our masterclass last Wednesday. Bruno demonstrated the difference between Samba and Bossa Nova styles, inviting students to workshop comping and melody phrasing on standards. Even director Dave Pietro joined in!

We’re thrilled to announce a new faculty member at NYU Jazz Studies, Brandon Lee!
Bach Artist, Brandon Lee is a New York City-based jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and educator. Lee has worked with a plethora of artists and bands in the NYC area, including, the Kenny Barron Quintet, Kurt Elling, Aaron Diehl, Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Ron Carter Big Band, Jimmy Heath Big Band, Danny Jonokuchi Big Band, Darcy James Argue and many more. He is also part of a series of tours with a lindy hop show, Swing Out, featuring the Eyal Vilner Big Band. Currently, Lee is an orchestra member in the brand new, 4-time Tony award-winning musical, Some Like It Hot.

Happy Summer! We’re thrilled to begin the first of two Summer Jazz Workshops on Monday. As a part of the workshops, we’re hosting the 2023 NYU Summer Jazz Festival! That begins Tuesday night with The Lenny White Trio. All concerts are free, open to the public, and begin 7pm at Provincetown Playhouse. Come hang with us!
Our Spring 2023 has finally come to an end. Congrats to all of our students for finishing strong! We hope you all have a great summer, and we hope to see some new and familiar faces at our NYU summer jazz workshop!

We have officially wrapped up our NYU spring jazz festival 2023! Over the last two weeks, all of our ensembles have either performed an NYU venue (or the blue note!) as part of the festival, or had time in our NYU Dolan Recording Studio to showcase their semester work! We had a great collegium seminar yesterday with Edu Ribeiro, Vinicius Gomes, and Noah Garabedian! Their session was part performance, part Q&A, part workshop! Our students enjoyed and interactive class learning about Brazilian music
Two of our NYU ensembles will be performing on May 7 at the Blue Note Brunch! The Martin Wind Ensemble has a 12:30 set and the NYU World Music Ensemble led by Brad Shepik will begin at 2:30pm. Hope to see you there.

Recital season is well underway in the jazz studies department! We have 18 recitals this semester between our junior and senior undergrad students. Recitals are now open to non-NYU community members, so make sure to check with your student to coordinate your attendance!

We enjoyed a fun concert put on by three NYU undergrads in our collegium seminar today. They brought a new and innovative sound to the stage. Great job!!

We lost one of the greats today.
Wayne Shorter was a groundbreaking musician, composer, arranger, improvisor, and mentor. He left a huge impact on so many through his musicianship and masterful compositions.
We are so proud to call Wayne an esteemed alumni and are so grateful of his impact on the NYU community. We hope to continue to honor his legacy at NYU.
We had 2 great performances last week in our undergraduate collegium seminar and our graduate student seminar.
A student group performed and shared a set of music with our undergrads! We had a special guest join the group of NYU students on drums.
In our graduate seminar, we had Sebastien Paindestre and Nicolas Prost perform. It was a great day of music!
It was a delight having Brandon Lee today as a guest in our undergraduate collegium program seminar. Our students had a great time playing with Brandon and learning some good lessons!

“Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra” led by Steven Feifke, Bijon Watson, Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra.
Wayne Shorter was listed as a best improvised jazz solo on Endangered Species.

We started up our undergraduate collegium seminar this week with guitarist Nir Felder! This was a super great clinic for our students, as Nir shared great music and stories from his career.
We were also delighted to welcome Jon Gordon as a guest in our Improv II course taught by Alan Ferber. He started off the class with a great performance and shared some improvisational techniques with the class.

Today is the first day of Black History Month! NYU Steinhardt is putting on 2 special concerts at the end of the month. One of which features NYU jazz studies faculty member Lenny White!!
“In observance of Black History Month, the NYU Percussion Ensemble will present Tim Adams’ 8:46, which was commissioned by the ensemble with the Aspen Music Festival and School and is part of the composer’s ongoing musical contribution to the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, the ensemble will feature the world premiere of Lenny White’s The Magnificent Seven and a rare arrangement of Duke Ellington’s Malletoba S***k for percussion ensemble.
This performance is free and open to the public.

Olivia Hughart is a jazz saxophonist/woodwind doubler, composer, and advocate, who is now a senior at NYU majoring in Saxophone Performance/Jazz Studies with a minor in public policy/management. Throughout her time at NYU, she has had the pleasure of working with artist faculty members including Dave Pietro, Dave Liebman, Billy Drewes, Alan Ferber, Patricia Brennan, Drew Gress, Brad Shepik, and Mike Rodriguez. Olivia is an active musician in NYC and is also the founder/artistic director of Key of She Jazz, an organization that supports and encourages more girls to be involved in jazz, starting at a middle school level.
