Our Story

Welcome to the Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab, led by Professor Alexandra Horowitz, Senior Research Fellow at Barnard College and author of four books, including “Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know”. This page is maintained by researchers at the lab (and not monitored by Dr. Horowitz).

Our group investigates the behavior and cognition of domestic dogs in their natural environments. We recruit dogs and owners to participate in fun and interesting studies: some recent studies looked at the dog’s sense of their own size; dogs’ use of smell to identify themselves and their persons; dog-human play strategies; and anthropomorphisms. We conduct studies in New York City, and would love for you and your dog to participate!
