Operating as usual

[04/06/21]   This is a momentous day for me. After an amazing career of 39 years, I am retiring from The Lett Group and teaching. I have loved the opportunities I was given to share my knowledge and love of the world's cultures, etiquette and protocol with students also interested in making the world a more harmonious place.
I will still be around and continuing to write my story, drawing fun coloring pages, and volunteering with groups that share my passions but my focus will be on subjects other than those that have taken me to this point.
I am so grateful that you were part of my journey so far and I hope our encounter left you with greater knowledge and appreciation for the nuances of behavior that allow us all to live together in better harmony, with greater respect and kindness towards one another.
I welcome you to get in touch if you want to chat.
I wish you well in all your future endeavors and success in all you intend to accomplish.

With warm regards,
Cynthia Lett

[01/25/21]   While we will continue to comment about the proper protocol to use in situations, FaceBook has decided that learning about Protocol which is something that every person who works with any government worldwide should know, is too political and can hurt someone's feelings. Ignorance is showing. If we don't follow Protocol, we will insult, demean and ignore those who should never be insulted, demeaned or ignored. FaceBook - learn what Protocol is and why it is important before you show your ignorance and cut off education about it for those who want to learn.

[01/23/21]   For someone who knows, teaches and lives proper protocol, hearing First Lady Jill Biden referred to and addressed as Dr. Jill Biden is frustrating. While earning a PhD is admirable, those who do are correctly addressed as Dr. only when in the arena of the subject matter of their degree. Socially they still use the honorific applicable to their social standing. In the case of Jill Biden, she would use Mrs. or Madame First Lady. Addressing an envelope to her would also not include the Dr. honorific. The Dr. honorific belongs to medical doctors who have completed medical school.

[12/26/20]   Don't forget to write Thank-You Notes! Your appreciation goes a long way!

Etiquette

Got a quick etiquette question? Would you like a leader in the etiquette expert field to give you insight about handling difficult situations? Chat with Cynthia Lett for an expert's insight. A very nominal fee applies. All fees collected will be donated to the Lowcountry Food Bank.

https://premium.chat/etiquettepro/17957

When you need to know the best way to handle a situation with grace and leave a great impression, let's chat. I can give you the right words, the kindest way to solve a problem that will keep the relationship strong and leave both parties feeling good.

[10/12/20]   Let's Talk Protocol! We are tired of hearing the Press refer to former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Congressmen/women, Secretaries of Whatever, and Ambassadors using their former honorific. According to the Constitution of the United States, we have one President, Vice President, currently elected and serving members of Congress and appointed Secretaries currently serving who may be addressed using these honorifics. Once you leave office you are no longer allowed to be addressed with those honorifics. And know that Congressman/woman is not an honorific - it's a job description. Members currently serving are supposed to addressed using their civilian honorific (ie. Mr, Ms, Mrs., Dr., Professor, etc.). They continue to be addressed the same when they leave office. Only Senators and Governors (if they wish) retain their elected honorific after leaving office.
It is the Press's duty to inform correct usage of these honorifics and not use them to emphasize their approval or disapproval of the individual. Misusing them only serves to make the user look uneducated disinterested in the truth.

[09/30/20]   Chris Wallace needs to learn that Joe Biden is not the Vice President. The USA has one Vice President at a time. He should have been called either Senator Biden or Mr. Biden according to protocol. But I guess protocol isn’t important to the press corps.

[08/22/19]   Back to School is HERE!! We have been discussing perhaps the most overlooked and "unpacked" school supplies of all...Manners and Etiquette!

It's time for Etiquette tips to help prepare your child for their first day of school!

Tip #4 - Social 'Studied' Scholars

For every age Kinder through 12th, social skills is an absolute must in order to guarantee an enjoyable year for our kiddos! Whether we are explaining to our first time kindergartner's that we do not take toys from our friends, or we are having tough conversations with high schoolers about what it means to avoid gossiping about others (whether the information is true or not), some etiquette tips can really help prepare our kids to make it a great year with their peers on the playgrounds, fields or classrooms!

Examples:
-Playground manners- taking turns, waiting in line, sharing toys, following rules that keep everyone safe, proper voice volume levels, they need to understand physical boundaries, and pushing or placing hands on others...
- Classroom manners- Teachers are always in charge and deserve respect and attention, use proper means to answer questions, hands raised and quietly paying attention, find out any classroom or school rules that need to be followed.

It is important that children have an understanding of the etiquette and manners that are expected of them so that they can rise to the challenge and make it a positive experience for them!

Have any other ideas or examples? We'd love to hear them in the comments below!

Thanks for following along for our Back To School Tips!
Have an amazing year!

[08/19/19]   Back to School is around the corner! Parents and kids everywhere will be getting supplies together and getting into new routines and perhaps new environments. We are going to be discussing perhaps the most overlooked and "unpacked" school supplies of all...Manners and Etiquette!

It's time for Etiquette tips to help prepare your child for their first day of school!

Tip #3 - Pass The First Test...Come Prepared!

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
― Benjamin Franklin

It communicates respect when kids can show that they have taken all the proper steps and showed up their first day with everything they need to succeed! Not only that, it helps them feel confident and ready for whatever the day holds! Make sure your child has everything they need and all that has been requested by their teacher before they show up their first day. There are even supplies lists available in most retail stores to help guide you!

ALSO, make sure your children leave out of their pockets and backpacks anything that could be a distraction to other class mates or teachers. Make sure you and your children are aware of school policies regarding cell phones and electronics, and leave behind anything that could violate those rules.

Have any other ideas or examples? We'd love to hear them in the comments below!

Tip #2 - R-E-S-P-E-C-T...Find out it's a circle!

Ever hear the phrase "What goes around comes around"? Now I know what you're thinking, I am not referring to the inevitable colds and germs that make their way around when school is back in session! I'm talking about kids heading into schools and classrooms knowing that if you show respect it will come back around to you. It's a pretty simple equation, Give respect = Get respect. Here are some topics to discuss around the topic of respect with your kids before they get to school this year:

1- Time. Thats right time needs to be respected. Explain to your kids the importance of honoring time. They need to respect when school starts, When classes start and end, and how disruptive it can be to show up late, or even too early.

2- Teachers and staff. Explain to them the importance of using proper titles when addressing adults, and leaders. Give them examples of what is appropriate, and help them understand the respect communicated when they do use an appropriate title to address their teachers and administrators.

It's time for Etiquette tips to help prepare your child for their first day of school!

Tip #1 - What's the Magic Word?

"Please", "Thank you", "Excuse Me", these magical little words are like the ABC's of manners! For back to school, go back to basics parents... and yes I mean you!!! Kid's are more likely to have good manners when they witness good manners at home, and when it is encouraged and supported! If you hear your child say thank you or please, notice it and make sure to acknowledge it! Make a big deal out of those simple magical manners words and you will hear them more...

Also, explain to them how these basic good manners will go along way in their schools, classrooms, and relationships.
Most importantly model it for them! They need to see you treat their teachers and administrators with kindness and exercise great manners, they are likely to follow your lead, and it will set the tone for their year!
