Ruby Middleton Forsythe
Educator

Ruby Middleton Forsythe was born on June 27, 1905, in Charleston. She attended Avery Institute for grammar and high school. Avery epitomized excellence and provided its students with the best liberal education and cultural experience. She received her BS from South Carolina State College and started her teaching career in 1924 in Mount Pleasant's Laing School. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1988 (she won four honorary doctorates over her lifetime). Her husband, the late Reverend William Essex Forsythe, was an Episcopal Priest who was in charge of Holy Cross-Faith Memorial Church and School on Pawley’s Island. In 1938, she began teaching in a one-room school on Pawley's Island, the only educational facility available to Black people on the island. She taught discipline, respect, social responsibility, and the basics: reading, mathematics, spelling, and geography. Ms. Ruby’s students often entered school with an educational disadvantage. But, she instilled in each of them that they can achieve. She insisted that they never say, “I can’t,” but always, “I’ll Try.” Forsythe continued to teach at Holy Cross-Faith Memorial School until she retired in 1981. At age 85, Ruby Forsythe walked down the stairs from her living quarters above the school and begins another day of quality teaching and basic training. When she rings her brass school bell it is time for students to enter school and for the cultivation of each mind to commence. Ms. Ruby nurtured as well as teached. She continued to teach because there is a need for children to learn. Her philosophy of teaching is: “I like the idea of sowing the best seed into whatever soil we come in contact with. Watch the growth and the reproduction of the product sent forth.”

Known to many as Miss Ruby, Forsythe summed up her legacy to education and to the people of the island where she taught for much of the 20th century by affirming that she sowed "the best seed into whatever soil we come into contact with, watching the growth, and the reproduction of the product sent forth."

Miss Ruby’s Kids is named for Mrs. Ruby Forsythe. Poverty and the resulting poor school performance in Georgetown County, SC prompted the founders of Miss Ruby’s Kids to look for ways to alleviate this growing problem. Miss Ruby’s Kids was founded in February, 2003 by sisters Jo Fortuna and Betsy Marlow as a replication of the nationally known Parent-Child Home Program. It was initially sponsored by Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church and is now an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Miss Ruby’s Kids began working with five families in October, 2003, and now serves over 170 children in the three program areas. A parent is a child’s first and most important teacher. Miss Ruby’s Kids knows that with a warm lap, a good book, and an ample supply of love, parents have all the tools necessary to start their children on their way to a happy, successful future. We should know; we help them do it every day!

Ruby Middleton Forsythe died in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina on May 29, 1992.
