We are so touched and grateful to have Miss Ruby’s legacy shared! ❤️ Thank you so much East Cooper Community Outreach for including us and our founder in your campaign during Black History Month! We know Miss Ruby would be so proud!
Each Friday in February, ECCO will celebrate Black History Month by honoring individuals from the East Cooper communities. Today, we're celebrating the life and impact of Ms. Ruby Middleton Forsythe.
Born in Mount Pleasant in 1905, she graduated high school from Laing, earned her license of education from the Avery Institute, and her BS from South Carolina State College. While she began her teaching career at Laing School, she moved to Pawleys Island in 1938 to begin teaching in a one-room school, the only educational facility available to Black people on the island. Affectionately known as "Miss Ruby", she taught for more than six decades, through the Jim Crow era, and through constant harassment from the Ku Klux Klan. Forsythe summed up her legacy to education and to the people of the island where she taught by affirming that she sowed "the best seed into whatever soil we come into contact with, watching the growth, and the reproduction of the product sent forth."
Over her lifetime, Miss Ruby received four honorary doctorates for the impact she made in the lives of children throughout the Grand Strand and East Cooper communities.

Ruby’s Academy Childcare and Preschool opened in 2008 by Mrs. Vaudrien Forsythe Ray. Mrs. Ray is the granddaughter of Mrs. Ruby Middleton Forsythe (“Miss Ruby”), a noted educator who taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina during the Jim Crow era. Miss Ruby’s son, Burns Forsythe, worked for the Charleston County School District for nearly 30 years and served on the school board for more than four years. Mrs. Ray continues the same commitment to education as her past two generations. She has a masters degree in education and education has always played a significant role in her family. Both Mrs. Ray and her husband William come from families of educators who taught in South Carolina schools.
Since entering the childcare industry, Mrs. Ray has been committed to providing exceptional services to the families who entrust her with the care of their child. Together, with her husband William, Mrs. Ray ensures that the atmosphere at Ruby’s Academy is warm and professional while encouraging independence, problem-solving, positive self-esteem and the development of critical thinking skills.
Ruby’s Academy is designed to accommodate children from the ages of 8 weeks through 5 years-old, as well as an after-school program. The staff is dedicated to teaching and caring for all children, utilizing modern techniques and sound Christian values. Ruby’s Academy is provides the highest quality of care by providing developmentally appropriate instruction, character development, nutrition education, physical education, and Spanish instruction. In addition, annual assessments are conducted to determine each child’s educational progress.
