Experimental Brain Implant Lets Man With Paralysis Turn His Thoughts Into Words 07/16/2021

Experimental Brain Implant Lets Man With Paralysis Turn His Thoughts Into Words

SLP Angie Neal:

“THIS is what is meant by the Science of Reading.
I’ll explain…
In order for this kind of AMAZING breakthrough to occur, neurologists had to create an algorithm for how the brain processes language (I’ll post video of how they did that in the comments). What they discovered is what many of us already know - that we do not process words as a whole, we process words based on the specific sequence of sounds (phonemes). In creating this algorithm they actually discovered that we first recognize the feature of the phoneme(s) based on manner of articulation (fricative, affricate, plosive, etc.) This algorithm converts the sequence of phonemes the person is THINKING into an identifiable representation (i.e. graphemes/specific letters or combinations of letters that represent sounds) that can be recognized. This proves the critical importance of phonemic awareness. It also reinforces the importance of teaching the alphabetic principle through connections to what the mouth is doing and descriptions of the manner in which it is produced. THIS is the science of reading - research from a variety of professions that help inform the connection between spoken and written language.”

Experimental Brain Implant Lets Man With Paralysis Turn His Thoughts Into Words A stroke left a man paralyzed and speechless. Now a device that decodes brain signals is letting him generate words and sentences.

ADDitude

"There are many oppositional behaviors that come up because of ADHD, because kids are overly reactive, overly impulsive, have a hard time sticking to plans. And really, for the vast majority of kids who get labeled oppositional, it really is just part of their ADHD." 👉 https://bit.ly/3nvEQtD

The SC Dyslexia Handbook has been released by the SC Department of Education. Please note that, although IDA-SC and the Dyslexia Task Force offered numerous and extensive editing suggestions, which the SCDOE reported they took into consideration, neither IDA-SC or the Dyslexia Task Force, as a whole, had an official role or voice in the final version of the handbook. However, we consider this handbook an important first step to Dyslexia Awareness in our state and thank the SCDOE for their time and effort to producing this document. Much more work still needs to be done to meet the needs of all students so ALL CAN READ WELL.
