Does anybody know who we contact to make a complaint or concern about the buses this year?
Great programs for all students. After my granddaughter had wonderful years there, the family moved away. Her younger sister spent one year in another school then begged her parents to move back in with me, so she could also attend fifth grade at Belle Hall. She did. Both girls have been in the top of their classes at Wando, partly because of the excellent foundation they received at Belle Hall.

Mission: Since Belle Hall Elementary first opened it's doors in 1990; our mission has been to develop skilled, respected, independent seekers of knowledge by providing a rich, diverse, and challenging curriculum. We serve an ethnically diverse population of 762 students in grades Child Development through the 5th grade, with 78% of the population white and 22% non-white. Instructional programs include all special education services, Reading Recovery, Gifted and Talented, fine arts, computer, guidance, Accelerated Reader, chorus, handbells, and regular intervention groups for students needing academic assistance in kindergarten, first and second grades. Students may also participate on the track team, basketball team, and tennis team. Students in 2nd through 5th grades may qualify for the Gifted and Talented program. This year over 40% of our children participated in this program. We strive to maintain low numbers in 1st grade with less than 20 in most classes. Second and third grades maintain a 24:1 average student-teacher ratio. Less than 1% of our teachers choose to leave Belle Hall and over 80% of our teachers hold a Master’s Degree or above. Belle Hall teachers currently average 18 years of teaching experience, with three holding National Board Certification. Adequate time for teacher planning and training can at times be barriers to meeting the needs of students. The Belle Hall journey to meet the needs of all children enabling them to be successful, happy learners continues.

🌱Even in January the BHE Garden produces! Last week 5th grade dug up the sunchokes, and after some work today, Garden Club had a taste of “Sunchoke au Gratin”. If you don’t know what sunchokes (or Jerusalem artichokes) are, they are the starchy tubers of the sunchoke plant and can be a yummy substitute for potatoes in recipes.🌱

News from Nurse Nash

Dear Belle Hall Families,

Happy New Year!

I just wanted to send out a brief e-mail welcoming you back after a well-timed break...we hit the 50 plus mark with the flu diagnosis right before we dismissed for the holiday, so it was a good time to retreat from each other and (hopefully) start fresh, although we are by no means out of the woods. The flu season is not over and the predictions (as well as indications from previous years) say that February is going to be a rough month! Thank you to our wonderful teachers who do such an excellent job promoting the importance of hand-washing...there is no better way to prevent germs from spreading.

A note on our Backpack Buddy program: I have not sent out requests for food donations, but I wanted you to know that we continue to send out backpacks every single Friday, filled with healthy food items for families who need them. We have been blessed with enough monetary donations and food gift cards to provide these families with food for the rest of the school year, which is just remarkable! We were even able to provide a Thanksgiving turkey for each family in the Backpack Buddy program. Please accept my gratitude, as well as gratitude on behalf of our Belle Hall families who are so, so appreciative. I will continue to keep you updated on this wonderful program, now in its sixth year!

Finally, I have included a link (see below) from the American Academy of Pediatrics that reiterates some of the things I feel strongly about (particularly the understandable reaction from parents who push for antibiotics). I thought you would find it interesting, although some of it will not apply to your elementary school-aged children...but interesting, nonetheless.

https://www.choosingwisely.org/societies/american-academy-of-pediatrics/

I hope you had a wonderful holiday...as always, please feel free to contact me for any concerns at all related to the health and well-being of your children. Here's to a wonderful and happy 2020.

Fondly,

Nurse Nash
