Charles Nathan Lowery has been involved in dance since he was just a little boy. But five years ago, he made the leap from performer to teacher and dance studio owner.

Lowery is the owner of Fuzion Dance Complex, LLC, on Walnut Street in Mt. Pleasant, where he also teaches and choreographs.

"I've been dancing myself since I was 3. This is my fifth year in business," Lowery said, noting the decision to change gears came out of a personal tragedy. "I danced at Universal Studios. My father passed away, and then I moved home, and I decided there's no time like the present."

Lowery moved to Florida after high school, landing a job as both a dancer and a stage manager at Universal Studios in Orlando, but he grew up dancing at Premiere Dance Center in Connellsville. He said his brother and sister also studied dance from a young age, and today, his brother, Jeremy, is one of the teachers at Fuzion.

Kourtney Cable and Brooke Coffman also teach at the studio.

"My brother and I teach everything," Lowery said. "Brooke teaches mainly acro, and Kourtney teaches acro and contortion."

In addition to acro and contortion, Fuzion Dance Complex offers classes in ballet, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, lyrical and tap dance, as well as pointe and musical theater. The studio also holds classes focused on technique and offers half-hour beginner-level classes in ballet, acro, jazz and tap.

But Lowery said he also stresses more than just dancing itself. He also touches on such things as the commercial aspect of the field and other performance arts.

"I do try hard to expose the girls to the arts," he said.

To that end, Lowery reached out to the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh recently in hopes of being able to treat his students to a show there. He got a bit more than he bargained for, as the Fuzion dancers were invited not only to attend a performance of the classic ballet "The Nutcracker," but also were invited to watch the rehearsal and were given posters signed by the cast and pointe shoes as mementos.

"That was such a great time," Lowery said. "That's what I want the kids to see."

Lowery is a certified dance teacher through Dance Educators of America, and right now, he is working with his dancers to prepare for their first competition, which will take place in February. Along with competition season, nationals are upcoming, and Lowery said he hopes to take all of his dancers this year.

"Last year, we only took a select group of kids," he said. "This year, the whole studio will go to nationals in Ocean City, Md."

Dancers must qualify for nationals at regional competitions. Rather than individual dancers making the cut, it's the performances that are judged, with everyone who danced in a qualifying number making it to nationals.

The studio also will hold its recital in May at Westmoreland County Community College. And if Lowery gets his wish, the dancers may get a chance to see another professional show.

"I hope to take the girls to another show in the springtime," he said. "(Maybe) back to the Benedum to see a musical or something different."

Lowery said the studio currently has 80 students ranging in age from 2 to 18.

"We have people travel clear from Belle Vernon, Rostraver, Connellsville," he said. "We have Laurel Highlands students."

He said the studio always is accepting new students into what has become the Fuzion Dance family.

"My heart is in this studio," Lowery said. "I pride myself on being family-oriented. Our studio is more than a studio. We are a family."

Early this morning our Fuzion Family boarded Elite Coach Limousine and traveled to the Benedum Center. Where we got to watch a holiday classic “The Nutcracker”! Not only did we get to see the show we were invited to watch the extremely talented dancers of the cast warm up before hand! 🩰 This was truly a magical day!! ❤️
