Robert Biller was a decorated World War II veteran. He earned multiple medals, and was in some of the most memorable engagements, including D-Day. He was also a Mount Pleasant resident who worked for Lenox for 47 years. Starting in 1966, he came to the company when it expanded its product to include crystal production, after purchasing Bryce Brothers glass in 1965. We hope to begin research on this incredible man’s journey soon. If you know of any his relatives, please help us connect with them! We can be contacted at [email protected].

Feliciane (Felicia) Bacque was a testament to her generation. Living in Mount Pleasant, we know that she was working at a glass factory as early as 1909 when she was 14 years old. Family legend claims that she started in a glass factory as early as 7. We have yet to prove this, but we are learning so much about this young girl who spent each day in the factory “dipping.” She--along with her little sister Erma (Age 12)—worked the entire year of 1909. Erma was a wiper.
The girls were children of Immigrants. Their father was originally from France and their mother was from Belgium. Adolph made a living as a digger in a coal mine. In 1909, he was out of work for 34 weeks. We do not know why he could not work (although we do have some theories). His inability to earn a consistent wage meant the girls would have to do their part.
With each new name we dig up, we go on a journey. We find ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Feliciane and Erma were only children when they stepped into a glass factory. As young girls, they bore the burden of supporting their family. This may seem outrageous in today’s terms, but in 1909, this was typical. To examine their life is to understand they were only doing what many children were, and that is why Feliciane Bacque was a testament to her generation. (To be clear, we do not think Child labor is acceptable. We are only stating that it was common back then. Sadly.)
Soon we will be adding her story to our website.
