Postpartum Recovery Tip: Go Camping!

Not what you were expecting, right? Well take a look at the pictures below. They were taken during the first days at home with my new babes. I’m camped out on my bed with all my little necessities beside me. My husband even camps out with me sometimes. He’s the real camping expert and he supports my desire to camp out after giving birth.

The postpartum camp-out is all about you and your partner hanging out with your new baby in bed for a few days. Just like with outdoor camping, you’ll need to learn new ways to do cooking, sleeping, and personal care with baby around. Your daily rhythms will have changed rather abruptly and the postpartum camp-out gives you the time to sort it all out together.

Here are some of my outdoor camping tips that are also relevant for the first postpartum week:

1. Prep your meals ahead of time. If you have people who want to bring you food, awesome! You can also prepare large batches of soups, burritos, and muffins to keep in the freezer.

2. Arrange your sleeping space. This is not just planning where baby will sleep, but also collecting all the little necessities you would like to have on hand and placing them at arms reach from where you will be sleeping. This may be quite a large number of items. The idea is that if you wake up in the middle of the night with a hot flash, leaking milk, and a crying baby you may want a fresh shirt, clean nursing pads, a burp cloth, water bottle, extra pillow, a snack, lip balm, a diaper, wipes, and a fresh onesie beside your bed so you can breastfeed, hydrate, eat, and freshen everyone up before settling down to sleep again. This cycle may repeat itself several times a night for the first week or so. It can feel overwhelming at first because there is so much change to adjust to but your routines will simplify in time.

3. Protect the experience. If you can manage it- set aside work responsibilities, social obligations, and technological distractions to just enjoy this special time. You may also want to capture the memories by writing out baby’s birth story and taking pictures. Don’t feel guilty if you want to tell family members to wait a few days before meeting baby.

So go camping before baby arrives if you wish! And consider camping out in bed for a few days after bringing baby home. You’ll all get some much needed rest and you’ll give yourselves a chance to sort out your new routines.

For those of you with little ones already, did you spend days in bed after baby arrived? How did you spend your time?

Who knew it was World Breastfeeding Week? I just found out! Breastfeeding has gotten quite a bit of attention in social media in the last few years. Celebrities post pictures of their nursing babes, people write articles about how breastfeeding was the best decision they ever made (or the worst!), and of course there are those stories about moms here and there who are asked to cover up or leave a restaurant. People have all kinds of opinions about breastfeeding but the facts are simple: breast milk is the natural food for babies and you can breastfeed your child wherever you want, as often as you like, for as many months or years as the two of you desire. If you plan to breastfeed your baby, a childbirth class is a great way to set yourself up for success. Learn how the decisions you make during labor can impact your ability to breastfeed your newborn. Learn about how your newborn’s natural cues and reflexes all encourage and enable him to latch and suckle immediately after birth. It’s amazing! Birth Boot Camp classes include online instructional videos taught by a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and they are so practical and informative. With knowledge and support, you can have an amazing birth AND an amazing breastfeeding journey!

[02/26/20]   Are you expecting your first child but know nothing about birth? Are you overwhelmed by all the research you need to do and decisions that need to be made? Most of us have little to no experience with childbirth before our own kids are born and the representations of birth in movies and sitcoms are unrealistic, fear-inducing, and laughable. In Birth Boot Camp classes we will talk about all the decisions that need to be made during pregnancy, birth, and with your newborn. We will discuss the pros and cons of each choice with evidence to back it up. We will also watch birth videos with real women giving birth confidently in different environments. Save yourself the hours of searching the internet and take a class!
