Two University of Minnesota students named 2023 Truman Scholars 04/28/2023

🎉Congrats to UHP student Carter Yost (pictured left), one of two UMN students who are 2023 Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation Scholars! The prestigious Truman Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership and public service.

Yost, a history, University of Minnesota Political Science and communications major, has served as a UMN student senator and currently serves as Government and Legislative Affairs Director for the ABTS - The Association of Big Ten Students He plans to complete a graduate degree in Public Policy and would like to serve as a presidential speech writer.

Announcing Research & Innovation Day 2023 poster winners 04/17/2023

UHP University of Minnesota - Department of Educational Psychology student Natalie Dumas was part of the research team whose poster won the Most Accessible to a Layperson award at the College of Education and Human Development | University of Minnesota 2023 Research and Innovation Day.

Their poster, titled Siblings and Social Interaction Development of Autistic Individuals: A Systematic Review, investigated the role siblings of autistic children may play in their social interaction skill development.

CLA’s Get Ready program puts UMN students to work 04/14/2023

Manisha Asrani, a UHP human physiology student, got her first internship opportunity at Fraser - Minnesota a specialty healthcare and mental health services organization for people with disabilities, over spring break. The opportunity was part of the College of Liberal Arts | University of Minnesota Get Ready program, which has been in its pilot stage since 2022. Asrani, who wants to go into healthcare, said "it was cool to see what the life of behavioral therapists and their work was like."

UHP alum Ruby Oluoch (BA '17, Global Studies) and current executive director of the media arts nonprofit Pollen Midwest was featured in the most recent College of Liberal Arts | University of Minnesota Alumni Reflections. Her advice to current students: "be brave enough to see yourself first, accept who you are, and follow the path that leads you down—it might be a different path than you thought it would be."

UMN Student Organic Farm faces uncertain financial future 04/03/2023

UHP CFANS Food Science major Lizzy Van Ert has been at the forefront of the fight to keep the Cornercopia Student Organic Farm (UMN) on the St. Paul campus up and running. The SOF, which sells organic produce on and off campus and has built a dedicated base of supporters, ran into financial struggles in 2020 and has only one year of funding left. Van Ert wrote a letter to the CFANS Dean and Associate Dean asking for a guarantee of future financial security, which was signed by 52 students. She said she hopes the farm will get funding because of its ability to meet many students needs: "Whatever you actually want to do, you will be able to." Read more here →

UHP University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management sophomore Henning Hanson, and fellow UHP sophomores Daisy Forester and Cole Pivec make up the alt-rock trio Dial Tone, which came together this past fall. They recently made it past the semifinal round for Battle of the Bands, and will be performing at Spring Jam in April for the final round. “Music has always been a chance for me to relax and have fun, so I hope to keep using it as a creative outlet in addition to whatever else I'm doing,” said Hanson. UHP University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences sophomore Amital Shaver spent her summer in Bristol Bay, Alaska learning to fight wildfires on a newly launched all-female crew as part of the National Park Service and Student Conservation Association Shaver called the experience "invaluable...just to see such powerful women role models in fire who made these careers and who stood their ground and didn’t have to sacrifice being themselves.” Read more here →

UHP University of Minnesota College of Design Apparel Design student Jaden Evenson was a part of Professor Lucy Dunne's technical design studio that collaborated with University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences to create protective bucket hats for people living with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), an inherited disease that causes extreme UV sensitivity. UHP History students Darby Ronning and Olivia Olson are featured in the Wangensteen Student Showcase, open at the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Library until May 1. Ronning's University of Minnesota Libraries internship culminated in the poster "Women at the Wangensteen," and Olson worked with a fellow student to create "Matter of Artifact: Collecting Fragments of Pharmacy's Past." He wasn't originally very inclined to write, but the required class piqued his interest in research writing and helped him learn to weave ideas into conversation. She's now a freshman in the Department of American Indian Studies - University of Minnesota Twin Cities and served as a mentor to middle school students in this year's Gopherbaloo at Wilson Library.
