Welcome Tadd Johnson, UMN’s first Native American regent!

Johnson is the Board of Regent’s first ever Native American regent and will be overseeing the 8th Congressional Distract, which covers much of northern Minnesota’s native lands.

Tadd Johnson is a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and was UMN’s first Senior Director of American Indian Tribal Relations, a former professor, tribal attorney and tribal court judge, and currently still serves as a senior advisor on the government of affairs for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, and more. See MPR’s article on Johnson’s appointment to the board—linked in our story.

Thank you to the Morris Campus Student Association for pressing Governor Tim Walz to appoint a Native American regent and to everyone who co-signed our letter! This wouldn’t have been possible without student voices. This is a great step in the right direction for diversity and equity for all students, especially those students’ whose land we live and learn on.

Gophers,

As our term comes to a close, we’d like to take the time to thank you for electing us as your 2021-2022 Student Body President and Vice President, making history as the first Black ticket to run and win.

When we campaigned, it was under the belief that our University could do better and be better for students. Through reducing food insecurity, pushing for environmental accountability, and fighting for a $15 minimum wage, amongst many other important issues, we worked tirelessly to make that belief a reality. Our student government’s accomplishments would not have been possible without the student leaders that chose to be involved.

While our term is finished, our advocacy is not. No matter where we are or what positions we hold, we will continue to stay involved and support our constituents, no matter what challenges may lie ahead.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve in these capacities.

07/01/2022

As student leaders, we spend much of our time fighting for change. Occasionally, we let our shortcomings overshadow some of the significant gains that are made. It’s important to celebrate our successes and see the power of the student voice.

As the 2021-2022 student government term comes to a close, here are 10 of the greatest accomplishments we’ve had this past year.〽️

Photos from Undergraduate Student Government's post 06/30/2022

This past weekend, the University of Minnesota hosted the annual Association of Big Ten Schools (ABTS) Conference where student leaders came together and had round table discussions on a wide range of advocacy topics, legislative sessions to pass resolutions, and elections for the incoming ABTS Board for the new year.

We’re proud to have hosted the conference this year and to be able to work with so many incredible student leaders across the Midwest to advocate for over 500,000 students! Thank you .10 for this amazing weekend 🎉

CO-SIGN OUR LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR! 📝

➡️ Swipe to read the letter and co-sign the letter at z.umn.edu/DearWalzBOR

The Morris Campus Student Association (MCSA) is urging the Minnesota governor Tim Walz to elect a new regent on the Board of Regents with careful consideration.

The replacement of the recently resigned regent will be representative of Minnesota’s 8th congressional district, which covers much of northern Minnesota’s tribal lands—especially so with Minnesota’s new redistricting. Because of this reason and others listed in the letter, MCSA is asking the governor to consider a Native regent, which would be the first in the Board of Regents’ history.

CO-SIGN THE LETTER AT:
