How can it be good news that Americans lost $352 billion to financial illiteracy?

Because that's $63 billion less than 2020.

Maybe it's because 2021 gave us fewer curveballs than 2020 (yeah right!).

Maybe it's because people are just tired of wasting money and not knowing why.

Whatever the case, people are waking up. They've learned that they can't coast their way to wealth, or even financial stability.

They must learn how money works. And they must do it quickly.

As prices for everyday purchases continue to surge in the United States, many families struggle to make ends meet.

And even among those who manage to keep their standard of living and pay all their bills, something’s got to give.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Americans are now saving less than at any point since the Great Recession, indicating that money is indeed getting tight in many households that are feeling the sting of sky-high prices for food, fuel and housing.

Think of it like this—millennials only have to double their wealth four times to retire millionaires.

Do the math...

$63,300 x 2 = $126,000

$126,000 x 2 = $253,200

$253,200 x 2 = $506,400

$506,400 x 2 = $1,012,800

But it gets better—millennials can estimate the interest rate they need to get four doubles.

Let's work with older millennials, who have about 25 years left to build wealth.

25 years ÷ 4 = 6.25 years.

That's how often they need their money to double. Plug that into the Rule of 72, and you get...

72 ÷ 6.25 years = 11.5%
