Improving the quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley In 2001, the Ford Foundation gave birth to the concept of a US-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership by providing $3 million in seed funds.

At its core was a dream -- to create a partnership of funders who shared a commitment to supporting community philanthropy along the border. In 2002, The Texas Valley Communities Foundation (TVCOF) became a founding affiliate of the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Group, a bi-national organization of community foundations created by twelve (12) major funders. Gonzales: It is okay for Valley parents to think about educating themselves

It is okay for parents in the Rio Grande Valley that do not come from a college-going culture to think about enhancing their own education, not just that of their children.

This is the view of Barbara Gonzales, Vanguard Academy’s GEAR-UP director.

“The biggest issue is getting the parents to think, it is okay for you to do something for yourself,” Gonzales told the Rio Grande Guardian, during a drive-by graduation ceremony for parents.
