5 for 5

Our vision for 5 for 5 is to improve the lives of the impoverished through literacy and homeownership to improve the high school graduation rate.

5 for 5 is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve graduation rate through literacy and homeownership. Our program gives low-income parents an opportunity to own a house in 5 years, paying only $550 per month for 5 years as long as their students are passing from grade to grade with no more than one "F" per year. Our goal is to have more kids in high crime areas graduate high school, giving them a greater chance of not ending up in prison, something that affects us all.

Literacy to Success

Week 3: Blending Basic Sounds

Week 3 in our steps to reading involves BLENDING. This is the phase in which your child actually starts sounding out words and reading basic words. It is extremely important that your child is confident here in this stage with a multitude of single-syllable words with no consonant blends. That confidence is going to boost success in becoming a great reader.
**Along with this, introduce “Fry Sight Words.” These are the most commonly used words that may or may not follow a phonetic pattern.
1. Each day forward, introduce one set of “Fry Words” on flash cards until your child knows that entire set in any order, then move on to the next set.
2. Have your child use some sort of physical cue to say each letter sound, then blend, such as tap with fingers, followed by making a rock with hand to pound out the word.
3. When your child has difficulty, instead of telling your child the word, ask them to sound out each letter, and lead them to blending the word on their own.
4. Have your child blend at least 10 words each day like the ones in the video until they are successful.
5. Introduce the reading books with single-syllable words, such as “Leap Frog Leap Reader Learn to Read, Volume 1.” Each of these books are separated by vowel sounds.
6. Focus on one book at a time. Do not move on to another book until your child can successfully read at least 80% of the book without assistance.
7. You’ll see your child develop an excitement to read with confidence.

Literacy to Success

*Week 2 in our steps to reading requires us to build on the foundation. With this video, I want everyone to have your child say the basic letter sounds without picture or music. This is when the learning increases.
(1) Guide your child with how to make the complete statement said in the videos by doing it with him/her.
(2) Allow your child to say the complete statements as the speaker is saying without your help. (Only help if needed.)
(3) REPEAT --- REPEAT ---- REPEAT
(4) MUTE the video, and have your child say the statement with the sounds on their own.
(5) When your child knows all of the basic sounds, he/she is ready for Step 3 – Blending.

Sounds of the Alphabet by Literacy to Success

"Teach Your Child How to Read"
with Literacy to Success
Week 1: Learn the Sounds with a Word

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TchgRnYNz4

*Week 1 in our steps to reading involves the foundational level, learning the sounds of single letters in the alphabet with word association. With this video, I want everyone to have your child associate a word with the sound of the letter without music. It's OK if you've already introduced the sounds of the letters with music.
(1). Show them this video without music. It's OK if they can't keep up for the first few tries.
(2) Show the video multiple times a day.
(3) Identify the letters they have problems remembering. Work on those letters separately, then go back to the video. They will eventually be faster than the video.
(4) Give your child praise after each video, encouraging him/her to keep doing it.
(5) Play the video MUTED and hear your little one say the sounds on their own. (You're doing this until you have 100% Mastery of the sounds of the letters.)

5 for 5 was founded to help correct disparities amongst those in low-income areas by providing resources to promote a higher graduation rate. With a high school diploma, young adults have an 80% chance of never going to prison. This is our goal; we want every child, despite their economic level, to graduate from high school, learn a trade or go to college, and be productive citizens. You can help make 5 for 5 sustainable.

5for5 Memphis

5 for 5 will be 6 years old on May 13th. I am thankful God gave me the vision to start 5 for 5 to help those in need—specifically children. My entire life has evolved around children. Coming from a family of 33 siblings (9 from Mom; 24 from Dad), I’ve always been around children. As of today, we have helped over 1000 kids with relatively little help from grants.
**This year, I set out to make 5 for 5 sustainable. That will allow 5 for 5 to help children and families for decades to come.**

Sometimes we have to do something different to get different results. I led an initiative to increase attendance at a school with Chronic Absenteeism (students missing more than 10% of the school year) that grew Perfect Attendance by more than 70%. Every donation went to fund our program; $0 went to Administration. A donation to 5 for 5 serves the needs of our city.
Here's our final data:
