We are so proud to announce that the St. Louis fifth and sixth grade SOARing class, under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Gordon, placed second in the Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition. Second place prize in this national competition is $500 for classroom use.

The Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition was instituted by former Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater to encourage young people to consider careers in transportation. Sponsored by the US Department of Transportation, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and other industry partners, this program engages students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a competition focused on sustainable transportation.

The judges were very impressed with our students’ ideas. Here are some comments the judges provided:

"Excellent work! I learned a lot about what makes a bus stop more attractive to potential users. I think your team has some very good ideas. One way to strengthen your presentation would be to add approximate cost information for each type of bus stop and to talk about the weather issues bus riders in Memphis deal with. Most of the bus stops in my hometown have only signs. It would be lovely to have some of the stops you've designed to keep my neighbors and me comfortable and safe from the weather! Thank you for sharing your great ideas and designs."

"Appreciate the ingenuity that went into the variety of bus stops. Fun or more advanced features such as screens and vending machines might negate some of the sustainable features in the final eco-friendly version of the stop. Delivery of the presentation was strong, and I appreciated having visuals of all the speakers on screen."

Congratulations SOARing students!
