It seems there’s been a shift this week. As I look thru pics that were taken just a couple months ago, it feels as though they are from another lifetime that will never return. We will get through this, but right now we can’t yet see the light at the end of the tunnel, and that hit like a ton of bricks this week. My friends, my kids, my students... so many people have said they feel the saddest they have felt yet. The newness and shock has worn off and we’re feeling the weight of settling into a future that’s scary and unknown.

We must keep moving forward. We do that by focusing on what we DO have control over: our mindset and the way we care for ourselves. When this is all over, we will come out the other side a healthier society, and a more unified world. But not without our vision set on growth, and not without impeccable self-care. My friends, if there ever was a time to “buy in” to wellness, it’s now. Try to prioritize these things:

1) Go outside and exercise. Every day. This is non-negotiable. You must do it. Wear a mask if it helps you feel more comfortable. This is the single most important thing you can do for your mental & physical health.

2) Eat nutritiously. That’s not to say that you can’t enjoy treats. But try to eat a couple fruits & vegetables every day. Keep a handle on the sugar, processed food, and alcohol.

3) Find something you love to do and do it every day.

4) Decease how much news you watch. I watch every 2 days or so to stay informed, but any more than that and I start to feel hopeless. I only watch when my kids aren’t around.

5) Do whatever works to control your stress and anxiety. It’s understandable that all have it right now. It would be a bit concerning if you weren’t a bit anxious in the midst of a global pandemic; but too much causes other health issues and lowers your immunity. So, bake, meditate, color, work puzzles, dance, garden... whatever! Seek help if it feels beyond your control.

6) Write down or tell someone one thing you’re grateful for each day. It’s amazing how gratitude instantly shifts our focus and mindset.

We can do this. Keep your focus on better things to come. Because they will come. ❤️

This is so validating. If you’ve talked to me for more than 10 minutes, I’m sure you have heard me talk about one of these “pillars of wellness” that I teach in my #wellness curriculum @hutchisonschool:
SLEEP
EXERCISE
NUTRITION
STRESS-MANAGEMENT
LIFE-BALANCE
WISE USE OF TIME
These MUST become essential to everyday life if we want to move through our current situation and avoid repeating it.
Thank you, @drmarkhyman!

The Jordan family is a wonderful mix of 1 extreme introvert, 1 extreme extrovert, and 3 half & half. Acknowledging that this quarantine may last for a bit, we’re trying to find a way to make it work for everyone in our family, keep stress low, and meet the biggest needs. Ben cleaned out an old shop room that we were using for storage in the back of our garage. It will become an art studio for our introvert artist in the coming weeks. I love everything about it.

“It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small.”
There’s nothing small or insignificant about our current times, but I’m grateful for our beautiful day yesterday. We got distance from the media, the 4 walls of our house, and from other Memphians. Despite the distance, we’re more connected than ever. Life will go on... and we’ll come out better on the other side. ❤️

I’m all over the place, emotionally. I go through feeling overwhelmed to scared to giddy to confused to confident to sad to exhausted to inspired every day. As a wellness educator, I’m feeling paralyzed, which is incredibly frustrating. I see people posting a lot of info about health and wellness every day— some really good, and some really bad. I don’t want to add to the frenzy and overwhelm, but also feel desperate to want to help.... but also don’t know what is helpful right now. The rug being pulled out from under us leaves a lot of dust flying. So... until the dust settles, I’ll post things like this...
A picture of a doll bedroom makeover that Jules and I completed yesterday. Never in a million years would I have felt that I had the time to spend with her like this, and it made me grateful. Feeling gratitude in the midst of all this turmoil and uncertainty is what I’m striving for as I wait for clarity each day in accepting this new frontier. That’s where I’m at. .

I haven’t had an AAHA in a while. I did today. I visited @revivestudiomemphis. It’s a multicultural, non-profit exercise center run by women, for women. @queentitile taught the belly dancing class I attended this morning on day 27 of the #100dayexercisechallenge. I danced with women of many different ethnicities, shades of skin color, body shapes, dancing experience, accents, and ages. Here’s my AAHA...
.
I was a ballet dancer. I practiced a lot for many years, the last several with a ballet company. I like ballet. It is challenging and beautiful. There is nothing individualistic about ballet, however. It has absolute right and wrongs, from how to perfectly execute a pirouette to the exact placement of the bun on top of the head. I danced according to ballet code, just like everyone else. Any different timing of a turn, or foot placement was corrected. I still love watching ballet, am grateful for the years I spent learning ballet, and for what it taught me: that people trying to be carbon copies of one another makes me want to crawl out of my skin.
.
It has taken me years to unlearn the rigid lines and nearly robotic movements I practiced at the barre. Today with the beautiful women in my belly dancing class it dawned on me that it was impossible to do it wrong, unlike ballet. That because we were all SO different, SO diverse, SO NOT trying to be like one another, we could all just enjoy who we were. There was no “standard”. No right or wrong. It didn’t exist.
.
Do you want to feel better about your unique awesomeness? Hang out with people who are vastly different from you. Like a brightly colored box of crayons, there is no best, right, or wrong. There is no way to compare or judge. The differences just ARE and all that’s left is an appreciation for the variety of colors.
.
Thank you, Revive Studio, for providing a safe place for both exercise and diversity to be celebrated; and Queen, for modeling acceptance.
.
I can’t wait to go back.
.
Like this post, comment about why diversity is important to you##and tag someone to enter a drawing to win a free 30-day pass from participating gyms. List of gyms & rules in comments. Winner announced Monday night.

My goodness, if that isn’t the truth....! I have the privilege of teaching wellness to 10th grade girls at @hutchisonschool. We understand that these young women are our future, and the opportunity they have to do be successful and do amazing things is theirs. While this is what we certainly WANT for our daughters, it can come at a price if we don’t equip them with the tools they need to use the pressure they feel to rise to the challenge instead of crumbling. @lisa.damour will be at Hutchison tonight to help us help our daughters. I will be there for your daughters just as much as mine, and I hope you’ll join me! I’ll be the obnoxious one in the front row frantically taking notes. I don’t want to miss a drop!

So... at the beginning of the school year, she set a goal to increase her strength. We had a follow-up wellness meeting today to review last semester goals and to set new ones. Yeah.... I think it’s safe to say she met her goal. That’s 270lbs. In other words, that’s a crazy, insanely strong 10th-grader! This made my week! 🤯😳🤗❤️ 💪
