Just because kids don’t bear the same responsibilities as adults, that doesn’t mean that they don’t feel scared or anxious during stressful times. This weekend, join Philautia Wellness families in Talking Openly About Feelings. One of the biggest mental health tips for kids is keeping the channels of communication open. Always reassure kids that they can come to you with their feelings no matter what is going on. If they have questions or worries, make sure they know you are listening. Recognize that their feelings have value and they will be more likely to keep coming to you to talk about how they’re feeling throughout their life.

Last week, every afternoon we went over TWENTY yes twenty sight words. Not reviewing them over the weekend, I chose 3 random words from the 20 word Bank and gave them a test. Our 2's and 3's are recognizing words in 3 seconds or less. Can we say early readers?!? Children who are able to quickly and instantly recognize sight words are more likely to become more fluent readers who read at a good speed because they are not stopping to try to decode every word. When children recognize sight words within three seconds, they are also more likely to comprehend what they are reading.

At PMP, we strongly endorse beading as an excellent leisure activity, promoting childrens' development in the following areas:
Fine Motor Skills
Grasping: Various sizes of beads promote different grasps. Larger beads often promote the "3-jaw chuck" grasp, similar to holding a large pencil or marker.
In-hand manipulation skills: Many components of making a beaded craft increase strength and coordination in the small hand and finger muscles.
Visual Perceptual Skills, visual Discrimination, Scanning, Visual Memory: The child must be able to remember the beading pattern to determine the bead they want to use.
Visual Motor Skills, such as eye-Hand coordination: Threading beads onto a string involves bilateral coordination of the child's hands, and requires their eyes and hands to work together.

Getting your child to wear a face mask can be a challenge. It isn’t the easiest task in the world. Gov. Bill isn't encouraging our children to wear their mask so it's up to us to start it at home and school! Here's a quick video that you can share with your children on the importance and how to wear a mask!

Sorting and grouping things together is an important cognitive skill. It teaches your toddler to notice similarities and differences, learn to categorize and develops early literacy and numeracy skills. (And ten hand rubs always calms down impatience) Our two year olds love sorting!

Manipulatives, sometimes referred to as table toys, are an important part of the early childhood curriculum because children can use them to practice a wide variety of skills. Some of the most common skills children learn by using manipulatives include:
Fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and visual discrimination
Recognition of shapes, colors, and textures
Comparison of similarities and differences, matching, classification, and pattern recognition
Following directions, following sequences, and concentrating for completing tasks
Chances to practice creativity and problem-solving.
Manipulatives aren't just for preschool, they're great for home as well!

Yucky mouth toys!🦠🦠
Scrubbing with soap and water effectively removes germs from surfaces. This method is recommended for surfaces where chemical disinfectants are not appropriate, such as some furniture.

Disinfect!!!

When possible, toys and surfaces should also be disinfected. Dishwashers are a convenient and effective way to disinfect some toys. Chemicals such as ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and bleach are used to disinfect surfaces and objects. You can find a wide variety of products with varying ingredients. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions exactly as printed on the label.

Do not mix bleach with other liquids or cleaners because the mixture can produce a toxic gas. Bleach should be mixed only with water. Keep all chemicals out of reach of children.

It's always time to move!
Pre-schoolers should spend at least 180 minutes (3 hours) a day doing a variety of physical activities spread throughout the day, including active and outdoor play. The more the better.
The 180 minutes should include at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity.

Way too often, children with disabilities are over looked, given medicine and expected to not get it...it doesn't have to be that way! Get in touch with Therapy on Wheels NOW! This is a major move and I love to see more of us in the community making the kids a priority!

Donuts with the classroom pet!
Having the love and companionship of a pet can make a child feel important and help them develop a positive self-image. Kids who are emotionally attached to their pets are better able to build relationships with other people. Studies have also shown that pets can help calm hyperactive or overly aggressive kids.

Someone lost a tooth at the Wellness Center!
Did you know that CAVATIES ARE CONTAGIOUS?!?
Believe it or not, a child can actually “catch” cavities from their mother. In fact, 71% of tooth decay cases are caused by the transmission of bacteria from a mother to her infant. The primary culprit is Streptococcus mutans, a strain of bacteria that is passed through the transfer of saliva. This means that blowing on food, sharing utensils, and even kissing, can indirectly cause cavities.
With this in mind, it’s important for mothers to maintain proper dental hygiene. The better their oral care, the smaller the chance of their baby having dental problems.

Here are a few more dental health facts:
Tooth Decay is the Most Common Childhood Disease
Cavities might be common, but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t prevent them.
Candy is Not the Only Cause of Poor Dental Health
Children Should Go to the Dentist by the Time They’re One Year Old
Cavities Can Affect a Child’s Self-Esteem and Academic Performance

Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Active kids will have
stronger muscles and bones
leaner bodies
less risk of becoming overweight
a lower chance of getting type 2 diabetes
lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
a better outlook on life
Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, fit kids sleep better. They're also better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.
