Every morning you have a new opportunity to become a happier version of yourself.

The secret to getting ahead is getting started. - Mark Twain

I have found that how I start my day dictates my attitude and my productivity.

A walk with my dog is the best way to get my mindset right, to practice gratitude, to listen to audio books and to exercise.

What is your formula to start your day out right?

Have you ever had a great idea but lose momentum taking action and implementing it?

This is called the Law of Diminishing Intent
Here is how the process happens for most:

1) people get excited about something
2) ideas and plans get bandied about
3) they get some initial traction
4) momentum decreases
5) the initiative dies

Here are some tactics for beating diminishing intent

1 - Sleep On It - Give it a day and see if you still have the same motivation and excitement for the idea you had the day before. If not, move on.

2 - Visible Accountability - Share your idea on social media or with your manager or team. Making your idea public will increase your accountability.

3. Create Framework - Create a framework for all your ideas. This framework can look like a simple project plan. Work through your framework and see if your idea is still exciting.

What ideas do you have to outsmart diminishing returns?

It’s a big day for our family. I have been a KC Chiefs fan my entire life. It is simply amazing what has happened in KC the past few years.

This is the first year in over 10 years we haven’t gone to a game in person. COVID sucks !!

Last year, we we at the AFC Championship game in arrowhead. I can still feel the excitement of the crowd as we were headed to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. We were floating on a cloud as we headed back to the car high-fiving everyone on the way.

Today is special. We have the opportunity to win back-to-back championships.

We have to beat the greatest QB of all time. If we win, which I think we can and will, it will be special.

Here is my super bowl prediction.

Chiefs 34
Bucs 24

Chiefs bring home a second Super Bowl victory and Mahomes is the MVP.

What is your prediction?

Elon Musk shared these 6 tips for being more productive to the employees of Tesla.

1. Avoid large meetings. Excessive meetings are the blight of large companies and almost always get worse over time.

2. Leave a meeting if you are not contributing. He says it is not rude to leave a meeting but it is rude to waste someone’s time.

3. Communicate directly irrespective of hierarchy. Information should travel in the shortest path necessary to get the job done.

4. Avoid nonsense words, acronyms or technical jargon to communicate. It simply slows down communication.

5. Get rid of frequent meetings, unless there is an urgent matter. Meeting frequency should drop rapidly once the matter is resolved.

6. Always pick common sense as your guide.

Look back at your calendar in 2020.

I looked back and found some meetings I didn’t need to be in. I found some meetings lasted way too long. And, I found the cadence of some meetings was too frequent.

Do these tips resonate with you?
What do you find when you look back at the meetings in your calendar?

Have you taken your M.E.D.S. today?
Tom Ferry preaches this message, and it is a great reminder for us all.

Below are the M.E.D.S. he is challenging us all to get a prescription for.

🙏🏻 Meditate - In times of stress, no doubt taking time to pray, meditate and reset your mind is critical to your health

🏃‍♀️ Exercise- There is no doubt that exercising helps you minimize stress, and it makes you mentally and physically stronger to tackle your day.

🍲 Diet - Be mindful of what you put into your body. We need to eat for energy.

🛌 Sleep - The value of seven hours minimum of sleep is critical. It allows your brain to detoxify at night and reset for the next day.

We know that how we feel on the inside radiates to everyone on the outside. We can't afford to put our head in the sand and or worse, become an energy-sucking vampire.

Are you doing the best you can to take care of yourself every day?

I was talking to one of my branch managers today about leadership. He was at a point of giving up and turning the branch over to someone else a few months ago. He was really struggling to get his team dialed in.

He worked hard at connecting with everyone in his branch. He listened to what they had to say and he started to make adjustments.

I saw a post recently where Sara Blakely said. "It's okay to be a glow stick, sometimes we break before we shine."

Today, he said he so happy he worked though the situation and didn't give up. He is a better leader for facing challenges and overcoming them.

I reminded him he is in leadership because he has been called to be in there. He feels a responsibility to lead others and make a difference in their life. He doesn't do it for the money or the recognition. He does it because he wants to help and he has the ability to help.

Why are you in leadership?
Is it what you expected it to be?

When was the last time you stopped and celebrated your wins? I have had many coaches in my career, and all of them have challenged me to stop and celebrate my wins more often. I am guilty of moving onto the next thing. Don't be this person; everyone around you needs to know you are winning and that their contributions matter.

We just finished another booming month of production in the mortgage industry. We are starting a new month today, and it is Monday. Today is a great day to celebrate your wins.

What wins did you have last month you can celebrate?

Whom can you recognize for helping you recently?

Did you and your team reach your goals last month?

I challenge you to write a card and/or send a video text to someone today that has helped you with a WIN this last month.

Here is one simple leadership hack that you can do today!

I like to say I am a servant leader. What this means to me is that I want more FOR you than I want FROM you.

I believe that if I help enough people reach their goals, I will reach my own.

Who can you make the hero today?

Culture Matters! How are you, your teams, and your company maintaining your culture during the Great Shutdown 😂.

I believe the key to a great corporate culture is to treat your employees like you want to be treated.

I love our culture at Service First, as we are good, happy, positive, productive, professional, we type of people. We believe in and practice one team, one mission. We collaborate like no company I have ever seen. We don't have silos and everyone has an opportunity for their voice to be heard.

In order to maintain the culture we love, we hold all employee open calls via zoom every Thursday. On these calls, we share the state of the company, share stories, and obtain feedback live from the field. We have sent cards, video messages, buttons for brag boards, and simply called as many people as we can. Our branches have maintained consistent zoom meetings where everyone is staying connected as well.

This week all employees received a gift in their mailbox. It was the shirt I am wearing below. This is just another small token of appreciation. We know people are working hard and we appreciate them so much. The shirts are also our way to show we have fun too😎.

What are you and your company doing to maintain your culture?

Are you working on becoming the next best version of yourself? Have you ever considered this idea? What does this idea really mean?

Recently our CEO, Shawn Broussard, challenged us to become the next best version of ourselves.

I think this means we are going to move away from who we are now, shred our old ways, and move toward reaching our fullest potential.

I see life as chapters. We continue to evolve as we gain life experience, knowledge, and wisdom. Each chapter in our life could be 1 year or even 10 years long. When we look back at our own lives we see that the mistakes we made and the challenges we faced created the fabric of who we are.

My challenge to you is to think about and describe what the next best version of YOU will look like? What is different about the next version of YOU from the person you are today? Or 2 months ago?

Here are a few ideas to consider:
😀 smile more
💝be more giving
🦉 share more wisdom
📞communicate better
📚 teach more
🥑 eat better
💌 Love more
🚴 exercise more
👂 Listen better
😌 Be more forgiving
🎗 Volunteer
🤝 Be a better friend

We all have a better version to aspire to be.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what it means to you to become the next best version of YOU!

US Unemployment Insurance Claims from 1967 until now

This graph show US Unemployment Insurance Claims from 1967 until now. Wait until the end, it will really put things in perspective right now.

Dave Savage shared this video and it really struck me how impactful this pandemic is on so many people.

How can we as mortgage professionals help?

• Help educate people of their options, if they simply cannot make their payments

• Help educate people if they have saving but, are unsure if they should use it to make their mortgage payments

• Help restructure debt for as many people as possible, rates are crazy low right now

• Help our referral partners continue to market and to help educate them and their customers

• Step up to the call if you are asked for help your family or your community

• Stay home and Stay Safe - Be an example for others to follow

I am so thankful to be in mortgage industry. It has afforded me and my family so many opportunities.

When you first saw this graph what were your thoughts?

How else can we help and support?

How do you create a strong bond with someone?
Face adversity together!

During the summer of 2017 Michael Chalker, his branch office, and I participated in the Payson Arizona Mogollon Monster Mudda. It was a blast!

In this picture, we just made it through the slimiest, dirty, grungy, oozing mud pit of the race. It was like we were crawling through thick slime. We had to rescue people and help pull them out. It was incredible, challenging and totally AWESOME!

This pic was taken right after we made it through, we definitely felt a sense of accomplishment. Do you know what made it better?

We did it together! We have a story of adversity that bonds us and that we can share with others.

Sound Familiar?

We will be talking about how we made it through the Pandemic of 2020 for the rest of our life. Oh, the stories we will be able to share.

- stories of working from home
- stories of helping others in need
- stories of heroes stepping up and making a difference
- stories of home school
- stories about stories

This picture reminds me that our relationships will be stronger for going through these challenging times together.

How will these times bond you with your family, friends and your coworkers?

Let's make the best of our situation by finding the good.

Help others in need.

Spend Quality time with our loved ones.

Make a difference where we can.

One thing that is constant in our lives is that we are always facing change.

Change is hard because managing the journey is not as easy as announcing the destination 💥.

It takes 80% leadership and 20% management to implement change.

Seems funny we teach change management and not change leadership 🤔.

One of the best attributes of a leader is their ability to listen to those who they are leading through change.

What change are you looking to make at work or at home?

How will you lead the change?

The process of change, four steps

1. New information is accepted - perspective is gained

2. A new attitude is adopted - This deals with feelings, we have a new way to relate to something.

3. New behavior is practiced

4. New conviction is gained and we influence others. This is where we began to become contagious in getting people to change.
