Happy Veteran's Day. Today, we salute one of our own... Dr. Vanity Barr-Little and her husband Kourtney Little moved to the Riverview, Florida community after they transitioned from the Air Force and Army respectively. They decided to invest in Sylvan Learning as they saw the need for supplemental education was so needed after two of their three sons experienced learning loss during school closure due to COVID-19. Dr. Vanity Barr-Little opened her first Center in Apollo Beach in 2020 and a new one this year in Riverview, Florida. We congratulate her on her service to her country and now the students and families in the communities she serves!

Thank you, Veterans across the country for your service. We are forever grateful to each and every one of you!

Did you know? The Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Mu***os) is a primarily Mexican tradition where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives and celebrate the lives they lived. The roots of the Day of the Dead, celebrated in contemporary Mexico and among those of Mexican heritage in the United States and around the world, go back some 3,000 years, to the rituals honoring the dead in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The Aztecs and other Nahua people living in what is now central Mexico held a cyclical view of the universe, and saw death as an integral, ever-present part of life. Want to find out more? Our friends share great insight on something you might be experiencing and not know about: Grade Inflation. We’re used to relying on letter grades, but with the educational upheaval our kids have experienced schooling through a pandemic, it’s gotten a bit more complicated. You might see signs that your child seems to be struggling, only to find a passing or excellent grade on their report cards. It can be confusing. They break it all down and have some helpful questions you should be asking here: https://www.scarymommy.com/parenting/your-kids-grades-may-not-accurately-reflect-where-theyre-at-academically-here-are-the-questions-you-should-be-asking

It's report card season for many. Something helpful to keep in mind: The first semester is just that! There's still plenty of time for your child to hone in their skills for the rest of the year. Ask questions! Does your child appear to be struggling in a particular subject? Do they understand the concepts? NOW is the time to be in touch with their teacher, rather than waiting until later in the year when they might be missing out developing important skills.

It’s been great celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month! We love highlighting the histories, cultures & contributions of Latinos whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. People of Hispanic descent make up more than 18% of the U.S. population and a quarter of all children living in the U.S., according to the 2020 census.
That’s a lot of students who need to see their culture represented in American history. Want to learn more? Visit: https://www.iste.org/explore/classroom/9-resources-teaching-about-hispanic-heritage

This week’s highlight for notable achievements for is Dr. Antonia Novello who was appointed as U.S. Surgeon General in 1990 and was the first woman and the first Hispanic person to hold this title.
As Surgeon General, Novello was especially concerned with health issues related to women, children, and minorities, including underage drinking and smoking. She spotlighted the to***co industry's use of advertising targeting children and highlighted the importance of addressing women and children in the AIDS epidemic.
