[04/07/19]   Friends, I officially closed down my Judo club yesterday, and I plan to keep studying judo at another club, Nemesis Jiu Jitsu, across the river. I appreciate the chance be involved with your lives, and I hope Judo has touched you in the way it is supposed to: mutual respect and welfare, or "you and me, shining together." -- Sensei John Haman

Rodau Wettkampf

Sage earned his third promotion Tuesday, becoming a first-degree junior orange belt. He's a great example to our club of determination, and I'm proud of his accomplishments. To cap off his demo, he did a beautiful combination from kouchi gari to ippon seoi nage. It was gorgeous.

[05/02/18]   Thursday judo is cancelled this week. See you Tuesday.

This is Sage doing a modified upper four-corner hold on his dad. Kuzure kame shiho gatame. In Judo we teach English and Japanese vocabulary. It's well known that if you have a word for something your understanding of it grows. If you have two words for something, in two languages, understanding is even greater, plus you have just bridged a cultural divide. One of the nicest things about Judo is you can compete anywhere in the world and use the Japanese vocabulary, and people will know exactly what you're talking about. You can just sort of grunt and say a few words and teach a lesson to anyone. Judo is an internationalist thing. It knows no boundaries or trade sanctions. It was intended to improve human character and when it is practiced carefully and studiously, it does.

Rachel Haman earned her junior first degree green belt tonight. Quite an achievement.

Something to aspire to.

Congratulations to Keeley for earning her first-degree yellow belt!

Here's the all-Haman match I described in the other post, complete with yelling parent.

Sage Russell won his first judo match on his first try today. He went in strong, attacked hard and got a throw right away. Then he pinned the boy for 15 seconds to win the match. The other boy won the next two, but he and Sage had a close one in the tiebreaker. Very proud of Sage today!

This kid. Rachel Haman, on the left, is only 12. Her sister, Lindsey, on the right, turns 15 in a month. The only way Rachel could have matches today was to play with two girls two years older and 15 pounds heavier. Daunting task. One of the two girls was Lindsey. So the battle of the Hamans was joined. Lindsey threw Rachel for a score and pinned her. But Rachel ESCAPED, THEN TURNED THE TABLES AND PINNED LINDSEY. Lindsey then also escaped the pin, but Rachel got it back, and won by 25-second pin, coming back against her older sister, seemingly outgunned, clearly outmanned, but but with the HEART OF A LION. In my view, she was the MVP of the tourney. Also, I should mention that neither kid
had competed in a tournament until today.

O'Dell Lee and Richard Thompson had a great match today for the championship of their division. It was a division of big, strong men. They both earned it. O'Dell won it when Richard could not continue due to feeling ill. They both looked great, the the mutual respect was strong.

Judo is a family sport. Three Hamans, one tournament.

Getting ready for a tournament on Saturday. We take our time developing people. So this will be the first tourney ever for Ian, Sage, Lindsey and Rachel. Looking forward to watching Richard Dickey Thompson and O'Dell Lee compete as well. And me, too. Come see us.

I wanted everyone to know that I've earned the USJA's second level of coaching certification. This means I have undergone hours of direct coaching training, actually coached for several years, passed a new background check, taken the CDC's course on identifying and preventing concussion and taken Safesport's comprehensive coach training. I love judo and I'm equipped to teach it to you with compassion.

I just taught the girls how to throw Troy :-) with osoto makikomi. Now they are destroyers of worlds.

Sensei Ed Thibedeau doing our training. Ed is one of the people who created the legacy of judo in Arkansas we are trying to pass on. He has given thousands of hours to the sport. Thanks, sensei.

[01/14/18]   We had a really nice coaching clinic today. Ed Thibedeau did a great job teaching and we had students from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas. Thanks to everyone! Now let's go be better coaches!

Good morning! It's a great day for a judo coaching certification clinic.

My black Friday judo crew!

It is a proven fact that nothing tastes better after an athletic contest then a trip to Braums. This photo is two people in the thrall of judo, milkshake and burger.

Here is the best video from our trip to the Dallas Invitational. This is O'dell Lee fighting in a division above his grade, intentionally. He's playing in an elite division of brown and black belts. His opponent here is from Mexico. Also, he did not yet to make weight-- my choice as a coach. So he is playing people 10-15 pounds heavier. This is a typical big-guy strength match. He gets two attacks in and tries a weird arm bar that isn't a thing 😊 while his gi is wrapped around his head. The guy is playing strength and o'dell is defending well and has a nice front/back attack but the guy is just too strong. In the end, Mexico throws us with a big, sweeping harai makikomi. Good fight. Lighter weight divisions aren't so muscle-y as this. But here Odell sees what's it's like to play a bigger guy.

#worldjudoday Judo is more than sport. It's about being better than you were yesterday and challenging yourself beyond your limits whether it's mental or physical. But today we are extra appreciative for everything it's provided on and off the mats. #judo 🥋

[10/28/17]   Sensei John Haman has completed the Heads Up Concussion training offered by the CDC to help him recognize concussion symptoms in his athletes, and know what to do. It is a short, easy training. If you have a child in sports or if you do any kind of coaching, we encourage you to take the training yourself! This is just part of many elements of coaching training that we seek.
