ATTENTION BCOM STUDENTS: EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!!
For 5 extra credit points added to your in-class activities, describe a time when you tried to persuade someone to your way of thinking, to try something new, or to allow you to try something new. This could be a message intended for a friend, parent, boss, or sibling, for example.

First, briefly describe the purpose of your message and then provide an accounting of how you attempted to persuade your audience. Were you successful in persuading your audience? If so, what contributed to that success? If not, what could you have done differently? Did your message use any of the attributes of the AIDA method of persuasion Cardon discusses in Chapter 10 of your textbook?

Write your response here on Facebook and post along with your name, instructor, and section number. This extra credit opportunity is available until 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 15. IMPORTANT: Keep your posts professional!

Communicators in a Cart

This is an excellent interview of Dr. Todd Chambers from the College of Media and Communication that's well worth watching. What he and Chris Cook say about the importance of communication should resonate. Plus, Dr. Chambers is just a great guy with a big heart!

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY FOR BCOM 3373 STUDENTS!!!

10 points will be added to your In-Class Activities when you complete the following assignment and post it here on the SCSC page. See the instructions below:

1. Go to www.bls.gov/ooh and look up your future profession in the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
2. Read the description of your profession (be sure to read all pages of the entry using the tabs at the top) and deduce what types of communication the field requires. Remember that communication is a broad category (written and spoken words as well as images). You can also use your own knowledge of or experience in your field.
3. Write a paragraph that describes the communication you think you will be doing as a professional. Include the types and the channels you think you'll use.
4. In a second paragraph describe the area of communication you feel most confident in, followed by the area you feel least confident in.
5. Finally, describe what surprised you most about the description of your future profession.

Post your entry on the page by 11:00 p.m., October 16, and include your BCOM instructor's name, class time, and section number. While the entries won't be "graded," you need to proofread for correct grammar, punctuation, and mechanics before posting.

A hotel magnate says this is the one word you should never use to start an email

Good advice!

A hotel magnate says this is the one word you should never use to start an email If there's one thing that will put any email recipient off, it's immediately making the email about yourself by starting with "I."At least that's what Jonathan M. Tisch, co-chairman of the board of the Loews Corporation and chairman of its subsidiary Loews Hotels & Resorts, tells the New York Times'

How Much Business Is Your Profanity Costing You? 3 Reasons to Cut the Cussing I follow a lot of speakers, bloggers, and podcasters who swear on stage, on screen, and at the microphone. I’m no fan of profanity, but I’ll wade through it if there’s a payoff. I’ve made huge gains in my personal and professional life from people who could make sailors…

10 Things Emotionally-Intelligent People Do Not Do

The first article here dovetails nicely with our BCOM course.

10 Things Emotionally-Intelligent People Do Not Do Emotional intelligence is probably the most powerful yet undervalued trait in our society. We believe in rooting our everyday functions in logic and reason, yet we come to the same conclusions after long periods of contemplation as we do in the blink of an eye. Our leaders sorely overlook the human e…

The Human Side of Business Communications: An Interview With Kathy Klotz-Guest Along with relying too much on email, far too often at work we use jargon when simple language would suffice. It doesn't just offend the language sensibilities of learned folks, it's just plain bad business.
