Hi Friends! Happy Monday!

Do you have a morning ritual? 🌞

Ever since I developed a morning ritual, my days start off so much better!

The first thing I do in the morning is pleasurable exercise. I find getting my body moving is grounding, and I experience less physical pain throughout my day.🤸
Morning prayer and meditation is next. I want my mind and spirit to be as prepared for the day as my body!🙏

Finally, I choose my essential oils for the morning. Grounded in my body with a calm mind and grateful spirit, I can tune-in to what oil would be most helpful. Do I need something uplifting? Grounding? Is something that inspires kindness and compassion called for?

💐Essential oils are the aromatic, highly concentrated compounds of a plant. This week I'll be sharing about the benefits of essential oils, how to use essential oils, and three cool things about essential oils that you'll want to know!

What is the root-cause of suffering?

I believe that disconnection is at the heart of our suffering.

💔Disconnection from others.

💔Disconnection from the Divine.

💔Disconnection from ourselves.

When we feel disconnected, we'll do just about anything to fill that proverbial God-shaped hole!

Cultivating connection is neither quick nor easy. In fact, it is the work of a lifetime.

🙏The Sanskrit word Yoga is often translated as "union". It indicates that this is a practice of deepening our connection to all that is.

We suffer in isolation. Healing happens when we cultivate connection. How?

Start small. Become more aware. Begin by noticing your breath. Notice the little things you are grateful for. Notice what you notice. 🌈

Connection is not reserved for a few special, "spiritual" people. Indeed, it is the truest thing about you. It is your birth right.

What allows you to experiences your innate connection to all that is?

When you identify it, make it a regular part of your life. Spend time doing the things that remind yourself that even when you feel alone, you are always connected.

Have you ever had a habit you've tried to break?

Putting all of our energy into breaking a habit is like trying to hold a balloon under water. The deeper you try to push it down, the higher and stronger it will bounce back.

What can we do?

Well, instead of focusing ALL of your attention on breaking habits that no longer serve you, try focusing on building the habits you would like to adopt!

For example, if you are trying to reduce your sugar intake, instead of thinking "I won't drink a soda, I won't drink a soda" focus on what you WILL drink instead. What beverage would actually make your body feel good? Fresh vegetable juice? A comforting cup of tea? How about seltzer water with a spritz of lemon and Stevia? (My personal favorite!)

Remember, we develop so-called "bad" habits because they address some sort of need. When we no longer have to meet that need through negative habits we can compassionately direct our attention to what would truly nourish us as we learn to let go of what does not.

Have you ever tried a detox?

Believe it or not, I'm actually not a big fan of detoxing.

Does that surprise you?
Let me tell you why....

A detox is a short-term band-aid for complex, long-term issues. 🤕

A detox is not going to make you a healthier person UNLESS it initiates sustainable changes.

I believe it is more helpful to cultivate mindfulness around how we use the things we are "detoxing" from. For example....

❤️Is my social media use deepening my connections to communities I care about or giving me the false illusion of connection?

❤️Do I need to do a dietary cleanse, or would it be better if I adopted long-term healthy nutrition?

❤️Am I checking my email because I want to or because I'm afraid I will miss something?

Detoxes are fine ways to get us started on the path to natural healing, but they won't get us all the way there. The next time you are tempted to do a "detox" of any sort, challenge yourself: Am I doing a detox because I believe it would truly help me or because I'm avoiding doing the deeper work of releasing unhelpful habits?

As in the prefrontal cortex!

Wait, what? Too early on a Monday morning for that kinda talk? Okay, okay... go grab a cuppa coffee and then come back. Better yet, take me with you. I'm probably on your phone anyways! 😉

So, let's talk about the PFC! What does it do, why is it important, and most of all, WHY YOU SHOULD CARE!

The PFC is our higher mind. It is the part of our brain that regulates emotions, helps us make wise decisions, and gives us the ability to think creatively.

I bet you can see why the PFC is so important! And why I couldn't wait until Tuesday to tell you about it!

We want to take good care of our PFC. One of the best ways to do so....

Meditation. 🧘

Yep. Meditation. Do you have a meditation practice? If not, this week I challenge you to give it a try!

I recommend beginning your day with five-minute seated meditation practice. All you have to do is focus on your breath. When your mind begins to wander, return your focus to your breath. Let me know how it goes in the comments!
