CRITICAL REMINDER ABOUT ILLNESS GUIDELINES
With the increase of illnesses this season, PLEASE keep children home during the course of fever, diarrhea or vomiting as well as for an additional 24 hours until symptom free without using medications.

Please remind your child to wash hands often. Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

DEVELOPING ADULT CAPACITIES – to support children
Video featuring Dr. Jack Shonkoff, Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, which notes developing adult capacities are really the first step in supporting children that come to school poorly prepared and ill equipped to be successful.

WHY Can’t I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight ?
The simple practice of reading with your child every evening can play a deciding factor in the child’s future success. The choice is yours.

DID YOU KNOW ...There is a free APP available called "Points scan free," that does the job of "AR book find," but by scanning the bar code. So, so much easier and quicker, and great when at a book store, or the like!

STUDENT BIRTHDAYS
Parents, just a heads up that when I attach birthday pencils on student lockers - during the next two months, I’ll celebrate current and half birthdays. In other words, during the month of December, students with December and June birthdates will be recognized. During the month of January, students with January and July birthdates will be acknowledged. Having a daughter with a July birthdate, I’m sensitive to children missing out on school celebrations as a result of summer birthdays.

Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14, 2017.

In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.

That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an escape plan. Here’s this year’s key campaign messages:

-Draw a map of your home by using our grid in English (PDF) or Spanish (PDF) with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
-Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
-Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
-Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
-Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
-Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Talking with your child about traumatic events...

With tragic news stories coming with the landfall of Irma (and of course, Harvey recently), sometimes it is difficult knowing how to talk to kids about tragic news stories. Below is a link that might provide some help.

Note from our School Nurses

Illnesses are certainly in full swing here in the Louisburg School District. There have been a few reports of allergies, mononucleosis, Norovirus, and lice as well as more nebulous symptoms of headache, nausea & vomiting, lethargy and generally “not feeling well.”

As a reminder, please keep your child home if s/he is not feeling well; this will help prevent the spread of infection & help keep students and staff safe and healthy.

Please remember that in order to return to school, school policy requires that your child must be free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours without the aid of medication. A list of district guidelines can be found here:
http://www.usd416.org/vimages/shared/vnews/stories/57040de8c3ab3/SCHOOL%20HEALTH%20GUIDELINES.doc.pdf

Please remind your children to wash hands frequently – keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. *

If you have any questions or are not sure whether to send your child to school, please feel free to contact the school nurse.
