The Department of Religious Studies would like to extend our solidarity and message of shared sorrow with the families of the Christian victims of the Easter Day attacks in Sri Lanka, which killed at least 290 and injured countless more. We also stand with the the Sri Lankan people, and all those that are devastated and/or victimized by this seemingly endless cycle of violence.
These attacks reflect not only ongoing sectarian violence in Sri Lanka, but also the current global climate of polarization, tribalism, fearmongering, and the belief that violence can solve our problems.
As political leader and activist Nelson Mandela eloquently stated:
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
Thus, in order to combat sectarian violence we must commit to engage profoundly with differing groups towards understanding our shared humanity, and creating a shared safe and pluralist environment. This is a key project of Religious Studies. In that spirit, we hope that our department is always viewed as an open and safe space for our campus community, regardless of background or identity.
Statement of Solidarity
The Department of Religious Studies would like to offer an expression of solidarity and shared grief for those affected by the murders of 49 Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand. We also stand with our local Muslim communities in light of this climate of terror and intimidation. While this massacre took place in New Zealand, the right-wing extremist discourse that fueled the violence exists here as well.
These shootings reflect the growing popularity of anti-immigrant and islamophobic sentiments at the global level.
To counter hate we begin with ourselves. As the famous mystic Rumi (d. 1273) states:
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
The second step in combating sectarian violence against marginalized and minority communities is to commit to engage profoundly with differing groups towards understanding our shared humanity, and creating a shared safe and pluralist environment. This is a key project of Religious Studies. In that spirit, we hope that our department is always viewed as an open and safe space for our campus community, regardless of background or identity.

Religion and Nature: Sacred Landscapes

The Department of Religious Studies will hold a symposium in the ANATOL CENTER, “Intersections of Nature and Religion: Sacred Landscapes,” on Thursday, February 27th 2014, from 12:00 to 5:00, organized by Drs. Gabriel Estrada, Sophia Pandya, and David Stewart, together with the Religious Studies Student Society. Presentations include those treating indigenous religion, magic, shamanism, alchemy, sacred tree mythologies, and eco-feminist theologies. Speakers include faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and our keynote speaker, Dr. Inés Talamantez, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who will speak on Native American traditions, healing, and sacred space.

Dr. Inés Talamanez, who received her PhD from the University of California at San Diego, currently specializes in Native American Religion, anthropology, linguistics, and comparative literature. Her recent book (2006), Teaching Religion and Healing, analyzes the study of cultural competencies as they apply to the connections between medicine, healing, and religion. Her article (2000), “The Presence of Isanaklesh: The Apache Female Deity and the Path of Pollen,” examines initiation ceremonies for young Apache girls at the age of puberty. These rituals involve the collection of sacred pollen and medicinal herbs.
