“I wake up every day to teach you, to beg you not to be like me. I am a living, walking reason why you should do all you can to keep your babies safer around water…why you should educate yourself about water dangers and do everything in your power to prevent them from taking your baby too……. i write this today to plead with you to take this number one killer of our babies seriously. It’s just not worth it not to. You have a chance not to be me. You have a chance to watch your child live. Do whatever it takes to make that happen for them and for you.”
A mothers raw and very open feeling about the importance of TRUE SURVIVAL SWIM lessons and why water safty education is important.
I have been really struggling for the last few days to find the words to post here.
Should I talk about how important survival swim is for littles and how it’s better than mommy and me classes because it teaches actual survival in the water to our most vulnerable littles?
What about flotation devices? What fresh way can I explain, despite how important they are in open water, that they can actually make drowning MORE likely when used consistently during pool time?
When was the last time I talked about layers of protection or open water dangers? Has it been too long?
The truth is, I am still trying to pull myself up from the ugliest days of every year of my life-the dates my child succumbed to this hideous, insidious, hiding-out-in-the-open tragedy that we call drowning. There is no magic grief fairy that can take away the pain with a wave of the wand at the stroke of midnight after the dates have passed.
The “dates”. That’s how we grieving parents live our lives-subconsciously counting the days until those ugly dates that stole our children from us come around yet again. And they always come.
It takes weeks after Judah’s dates for me to fully pull myself back up to the point of handling life again. The days and weeks after his dates are dedicated to convincing myself that I can do this again. I can get through another year without my child. I have to, for your kids.
I guess I’m being raw and honest here because I want you to understand what it really is to lose your child.
I want you to not be like me, to not have to battle daily to push forward through the pain.
I wake up every day to teach you, to beg you not to be like me. I am a living, walking reason why you should do all you can to keep your babies safer around water…why you should educate yourself about water dangers and do everything in your power to prevent them from taking your baby too.
You don’t want this life of clinging to pictures and videos instead of holding your actual child.
Any and every inconvenience that may happen in the process of keeping your child safe around water is far better than never having the chance to keep them safe again. Hearing them cry is music to a mother who knows what it is like to never hear their voice again. Paying what it takes and sacrificing in other ways to pay that price is infinitely less of a cost than burying your baby.
I write this today to plead with you to take this number one killer of our babies seriously. It’s just not worth it not to. You have a chance not to be me. You have a chance to watch your child live. Do whatever it takes to make that happen for them and for you.

Trigger Warning: Image of a child that died from drowning.
“But isn’t letting your baby cry in the water traumatizing to them? “
“I won’t get survival swim lessons for my child because I can’t watch my baby cry.”
The real of this is that babies are going to cry. It’s how they communicate. They do it when they are mad, sad, not sure what you want them to do, hungry, when they have soiled themselves and yes, when they are scared too.
Toddlers have separation anxiety as a normal phase of development and will scream and cry if you leave them with anyone, regardless of if that person is in water or not.
Just because your baby may cry during (usually only the initial few sessions of) survival swim lessons (they would cry during any lessons), it does not mean that they are being traumatized. It means that they are being a normal, baby human.
Reputable survival swim instructors know how to teach your children without traumatizing them. They are trained not only in teaching water survival techniques but also in phsychology of learning and child development. They know the stages and phases and what kids can and can’t do at specific ages. They know how to teach each age and stage appropriately. Trust them.
Take it from a momma who knows what real trauma is and wishes she could hear her child cry just one more time….
Drowning is the most likely reason a child under 5 in the United States will die. You wanna talk trauma? THAT is trauma.
Get your children skilled in the water.

Many of our Littles are heading back to school, we will miss them so much but are happy that they have a love of safer swimming and can find their air anywhere in a body of water!
A big thank you to everyone who came a played this summer! We appreciate everyone who supports our small {one-woman run} business!
CURRENT AND PAST SWIMMERS: We will be in our outdoor space until the end of September! Reach out to schedule a drop-in, once a week Maintenance or a refresher week!

We had so many Survival Tests the past 2 weeks! We are SO happy these kiddos are safer and more confident in and around the water!
Most of our Little’s head into once-a-week maintenance lessons to maintenance their skill and become a stronger swimmer after becoming competent aquatic problem solvers but some stay in twice a week to keep building their skill.

Most children under the age of 6 do not have the upper body strength or coordination skills to save themselves, using traditional swim strokes, in a water emergency. It often takes years of lessons for them to be able to learn those strokes well enough to save themselves while using them.
But children under 5 are at the highest risk of drowning NOW!
The good news is that there ARE skills they can lean now and quickly, that can save their lives!
Give your little the gift of survival swim lessons. Give them the chance to survive the most likely cause of death in their age group.
Save the traditional lessons, which are also very important to learn, for when they are older than 6 and can learn them well.
Survival swim lessons even lend a hand in helping kids learn traditional strokes much faster, when they are older and really ready to learn them.

Real TRUE Survival Swim Instructors will not do this. Little Dippers Survival does not do this. We teach a gentle approach to true Survival Skills that will skill your child in the event of an aquatic emergency in months, not years.
Myth: Those survival swim people just throw those babies in the water and watch them struggle!
Truth: A TRUE survival swim instructor will NEVER throw a child in the water for any reason, at any time during their lessons. If you see a swim instructor doing that, please know that they are NOT true survival swim.
Throwing a child in the water is dangerous both physically and mentally. It will traumatize a child and it could also potentially harm them physically as well, depending on how deep the water is and how far up they are thrown from. This practice is NOT OK for ANY swimming instructor to do.
Survival Swim instructors will, at the very end of lessons, when the child is fully skilled and both more competent and more confident in the water, simulate real life situations in which kids may get themselves into water. An example of this would be putting a toy in the water and allowing the child to try to get it.
They do this to make sure the skills the children have learned can translate to real life situations and scenarios. It’s the same reason they teach kids to float even with full winter wear on. Just as most drownings happen when kids are fully clothed (and they need to learn to float while fully clothed), most drownings happen when a parent is not present and a child just wanders to the pool and falls in.
It is one thing to float when the instructor says to. It’s another entirely to recognize the need to float when you fall into the water alone. This is why this is done.
HOWEVER, there is no way a true survival swim instructor would EVER throw a child in the water. If you see this, it’s a sure sign of a fake instructor who is just guessing at how to teach kids to survive.
We MUST learn to recognize the red flags of fakes, so that we can stop them from ruining the reputations of real, trained professionals that can help our children save their own lives if they need to!

Judah Brown Project always knows how to word things the best!
“Lastly, remember that no matter how skilled they are they still need YOU to keep the supervision happening!!”
Just because they have had some lessons doesn’t mean the other layers of protection aren’t needed anymore. They still need fences, locks and alarms and YOU to watch them!
Did you know that one of the most dangerous times for a child in the water is when they are partially skilled in it? At that point, they are gaining confidence in the water and many think they have more skill than they actually do, causing them to try more than they can handle in the water. Parents also gain more confidence as their child begins to learn their skills and tend not to watch them as closely as before as a result.
BUT In reality, this is the time you should watch them EVEN MORE closely and not let your guard down at all.
Parents, pulling your kids from lessons in the middle of those lessons makes them even more vulnerable to drowning because by doing this, you are giving them more confidence and less competence than they should have around the water. This isn’t a “well at least they have some skills now and that’s better than nothing” situation.
With swimming, only having partial skills makes them almost more vulnerable than they were before gaining any skills.
Keep those lessons going until they are fully skilled and do refreshers for them even when they are fully skilled. Remember, kids bodies grow quickly and as they do, their skills need to adapt to those changes.
Lastly, remember that no matter how skilled they are they still need YOU to keep the supervision happening!!

Teach your children from the time they can talk that they NEED TO ASK PERMISSION FROM AN ADULT before entering any body of water.
Every single time.
Repeat this to them over and over and over again.

Little Dippers Survival Swim - Survival Swim - Little Rock, Arkansas
ITS WATER SAFETY MONTH!!
Today we are talking about skilling your child and getting to the right program
10 years ago, I was getting Certified as a Water Safety Instructor with the American Red Cross. I taught Preschool Classes and private lessons. Let me tell you, I have taught many different versions of Aquatic Water Safety classes, Water Safety private lessons, and Survival-Like lessons before teaching and being certified in True Survival Swimming with Survival Swim Development Network. I promise you, they’re not the same as Survival swim lessons taught by certified Survival swim specialists .
Not all swim lessons are created equal. There is a very specific technique that is used in true survival swim lessons. A survival swim instructor candidate is taught specific courses and undergoes extremely intensive training to be skilled enough to teach the smallest swimmers safely. No quizzes and tests are done online, In-Water training is performed by and monitored closely by a Master Instructor. The skills a Survival Swim Specialist learns are not watered down by instructor trainer.
There are many layers of protection to keep your child safe in and around the water. Barriers fail, children are ninjas and can can get themselves into any situation. Skilling your child is one of the best ways to prevent a drowning.
Swim lessons are OK, survival-like swim lessons are good, true survival swim lessons are best.
If you do not live close to Little Rock, Please reach out if you would like to find a True Survival Swim program near you. I’d love to help you find the right place.

Drowning is Swift and Silent. It’s not like what you see in the movies. There is no sound of screams of yells. Most fighting is done under the water.
Little’s Heads are disproportionate to the rest of their body’s rendering them top-heavy. Their lungs are still developing and small. They will go into a vertical position trying to come up for air. They will look like they are swimming. They need to know how to find their AIR. they need to know how to roll to their back and breath. They need you in the water with them.
Knowing what drowning looks like is a necessity. Knowing CPR is a necessity.
Drowning is preventable with Layers of Protection and TRUE Survival Swim Lessons.
Many kids will drown right in front of their parents, because drowning doesn’t look like what you think it does.
Do YOU know what it looks like?
It’s not what you see on TV. TV dramatizes it to keep you in suspense and make you keep watching.
This is what drowning REALLY looks like:
1) It’s SILENT. No splashes. No screams. They are trying to breathe and can’t make noises.
2) It’s FAST! It takes 20-60 seconds.
3) There is no jumping out of the water or arms flailing around. It happens almost entirely under water.
4) Their head will be arched up, attempting to reach the surface to breathe. They may bob up and down just at the surface for a little while and this can look like doggy paddling/playing.
5) Under the water, they are in a vertical, up and down position and their arms and legs are cycling as if they are trying to climb a ladder.
6) They can’t move forward much, if at all….not enough to get to safety.
7) They can be right next to the wall or an exit and still not be able to reach it…and they will drown inches away from safety.
8 ) They can be in water shallow enough for them to stand in but not realize they can simply stand up, as they are in panic mode.
Learn to spot drowning. You just might save a little life!!
