Does Improv Work in Masks? | Vegas Improv Power

We didn't expect a mask mandate in week 2, but we said yes to it. Would improv even work while 😷?

Thankfully, the answer is yes! In fact, we'd argue that masks make improv more necessary than ever 🤩

Does Improv Work in Masks? | Vegas Improv Power It’s all of us right now, if we want to meet for in person classes, rehearsals, and shows across the majority of the United States. Despite vaccination

From Plato to Viola Spolin to Amy Poehler, play is central to the lives of artists, philosophers, scientists, and well, humans. Do you play?

This is a tough question for many adults. As we age, we are discouraged from play. We are told that play is frivolous, silly, embarrassing, a waste of precious productivity time. This, my grown-up friends, is a big ol' lie.

Play connects, not only us to other people, but our neurons to each other. It creates new pathways of thought, sparks creativity, forms valuable bonds, and jump-starts learning where thought had gone dormant.

Improv is a safe place to play. Games and exercises offer the structure and function for exploration and open new doors to teams and individuals in business, education, and social groups.

Vegas Improv Power is offering a special preview of business improv on June 24 for individuals looking to apply play to their work. Join us!

Another reason why improv is facilitated versus taught, felt versus thought.

How does improv inspire you? How does it feel?

Improv = action. When we talk too long about something onstage, we either HAVE to see it happen, or we can NEVER see it happen. The audience and the players have had too much time to consider it, and it may not live up to or match the expectation that has been built.

Now think about where this happens in life. When we take all the time to talk over, think over, and second guess our ideas, whether in our brains, in our relationships, or in our business, we may miss the window to act. Our instinct, our passion, and our earned ability want us to act.

The gift on the improv stage or in the classroom is that we can literally do anything. Jump out of a plane? Yes! Perform heart surgery? Sure! Climb Everest? Done. Improv affords us the opportunity to feel what it’s like to do the improbable and to say yes to action. When we experience that accomplishment in improv, we are more likely to brave the risk in the real world.

Go on. Take the leap!

When do you play? Sure, we are in Vegas, the "play" capitol of the world, but we don't mean slot machine play. We mean the play where are brains are free from rigidity, from "no," and open to explore the possibilities on the other side of "yes."

Viola Spolin created theatre games out of necessity for play among children. Her games facilitated connection and creativity for education and communication. Today her improv games let adults in on the benefits of play. As we get older, we are shown that play is frivolous. This could not be more false.

Play continues to create new neuropathways in our brains, helping us to make new associations, have fresh ideas, and see all aspects of our lives differently. Improv makes that happen.

Do you consider yourself an artist? How about “creative?” Well, guess what? You are! Creativity and art are not limited to paint, dance, or novels. Creation is something humans do every day, in conversation, in schedule building, in relationship development. And yes, of course, in improvisation.

As improvisers, our first thought or action becomes the gospel truth. We have no time to debate, debunk, or doubt our first instinct. What happens when we say yes to that intuition and move forward with it? While in life our first thought may not always prove to be “right,” we learn about ourselves, we have a starting point to build upon, and we have offered information to our partners and ensemble.

Vegas Improv Power offers workshops to help you in your life and your work. Laugh, learn, and become a better human through improv!

Celebrating week three of our Book Club, we offer this take on joy, courtesy of Gifts of Imperfection.

Improvisers practice living in each moment fully, feeling, reacting, and responding to our emotions in full as we string together a story that will never be told exactly this way again. Though we try very hard to control and to plan, our lives truly are a series of moments. Thus, improv is practice for life.

Nothing offers the potential for joy quite the way improvising with people you trust does. Living and laughing in the spontaneity of an improv exercise or scene primes us for valuing the best moments in life.

The Future Of Work Will Demand These 8 New Skills 04/16/2021

The Future Of Work Will Demand These 8 New Skills

We may be sick of hearing how we are living in or striving for a "new normal." Whether we like the phrase or not, it is a fact that we are moving forward to the 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 normal of our work, our relationships, and our lives.

The future of work and life absolutely lies in these skills, which include ambiguity, resilience, and openness. Improvisers practice these skills in the fun and safe environment of workshops, classes, and shows, which have become more common playgrounds for professionals across all fields - doctors, lawyers, educators, and more - in recent years.

Improvisational exercises help us practice being human, something we have been called on to do more than ever this past year. How is your practice going?

Learn more about how improv can help you and your future at vegasimprovpower.com 🤸💙🎉

Storytelling is a human superpower. When we tell stories, we share emotions, memories, and connections. We make sense of the nonsensical.

Storytelling can also define who we are to ourselves and others, for better or for worse. The story you tell yourself, or the story you allow others to convince you of, can hold you in shame, or it can elevate your worth.

You get to tell and retell your own story. Do not let a fabricated story define your worthiness.

Vegas Improv Power explores shame, worthiness, and imperfections in our improvised book club starting tonight! Grab your spot at vegasimprovpower.com or in our Facebook event!

Improv and Vulnerability - Vegas Improv Power

"The foundational tenet of improvisation is “yes, and.” We say yes to our scene partner to move the scene forward. We accept the reality they offer and we “and” that reality with our own addendum. We collaborate moment to moment, in real time, building something that could not have existed without these people, in this place, with these ideas. It is the very spirit of vulnerability to say yes without thinking, judging, or planning out your next move."

Join our upcoming book club to explore the gifts of vulnerability, imperfections, and connection.
