Did you know there’s a direct pathway between your gut and your brain? AKA…food affects mood. Don’t believe me? Google “gut-brain axis.” It’s actually quite fascinating.
The food in your body not only feeds you but also feeds the bacteria that live in your gut. Most refer to these as “gut bugs.” Sounds gross, but we need these bugs to help us digest and dispose of the waste so we can feel good.
Recall that upset stomach after you ate something that didn’t agree with you? Bloating? Gas? Bet you didn’t think I was going to talk about this today, but worth a mention because of how significantly it impacts our well-being.
If your gut bugs are struggling to digest something, then it takes A LOT of your energy, which means it won’t be available to stay calm, be collected, or even focus. Imagine the magnitude of that for kids whose gut bugs aren’t as strong.
Here’s where it really connects to the Western world…us…the U.S.
More modern and highly processed, chemicalized, and hormone-filled foods have a terrible effect on those tiny gut bugs. So bad that it actually wipes them out. WHAT?? Yes, and when you don’t have those gut bugs to help digest and dispose, guess what happens?
Making sense now why we have so many food allergies and intolerances in the United States?
It’s not only the chemicals. It’s the sweeteners, artificial additives to “preserve” everything, pesticides, and many popular medications including antibiotics. There’s a reason I went in search of an herbalist. I wanted to find the most natural way for my body to recover from aches, pains, and sicknesses.
The good news is that gut bugs can recover, but it often takes months. Plus, eating artificial foods during that healing journey will put us right back to day one.
I want you to know how important the food we eat is to our minds, bodies, and gut-brain health, which is why I added it to our stress and trauma certificate program.

What micro-steps can you take today to eat better tomorrow?
Want to learn more about food and how it impacts mood? I talk all about it in our trauma and stress certificate program. Because the program is built around neuroscience and meant to address emotional regulation, how could I NOT talk about it?
Some of the changes I made over the last three years:
- Buying from a local organic farmers market or CSA (community supported agriculture).
- Less snacks.
- Knowing the sources of my meats.
- Consulting my herbalist before purchasing any type of pharmaceutical.
What questions do you have about this area? I am DYING to know.
As always, we’re not aiming for perfection here, just improvement. Tiny habits.
The Behavior Hub (TBH) was established in June of 2018 as both a non-profit and for-profit organization. TBH’s programming is focused on improving well-being of children and adults through psychological supports, nutritional education, and physical activity. In using this 3-pronged approach, we found that training parents, teachers, and organization staff in parallel to the child (known as Suzuki Method) enhances everyone’s effectiveness in fostering healthy growth of children.
TBH offers a variety of consulting and workshop training services to children, families, educators, and mentors that have been created to make lives easier. Our inspiration came from a personal connection as well as crossing paths with people who were struggling to find solutions to leading challenging children. When we thought into this reoccurring issue, we decided to create a social-emotional program from scratch, and The Behavior Hub was born.
Problem we solve...
Emotional regulation, the skills and self-awareness in relation to empathy and conflict resolution, is not provided in modern day educational programming. Given how prime emotional regulation and conflict resolution are to the success of a stabilized life, individuals are entering the real world unprepared for reality.
How we solve it...
Our purpose is to provide students with essential emotional literacy skills so they can live and lead a meaningful and wholehearted life. The Behavior Hub provides a comprehensive emotional intelligence education to a generation that is not introduced to social-emotional skills. Or, the education they do receive doesn't provide them with the tools necessary to live a mentally and emotionally well-balanced life.
