Wondering if giving birth in water is a possibility for you? I wrote this guest blog post for Lamaze.org about hospital waterbirth restrictions. Thanks, Simple Support Birth (Cara T.) for the opportunity!
What do you think of this?
Thankful is a understatement! Cara is the very best and made myself (and my husband) feel comfortable with the experience of child birth and breastfeeding. It far exceeded my expectations and was something so much more incredible then the hospital could offer. We learned so much, she was so personable, funny and truthful. My husband enjoyed it just as much as I did despite doubts before she arrived. Amazing to say the very least and so grateful that Cara was a huge part of the biggest day of our little families life. Thank you is not enough!
Yay you breaking the 100 like barrier!

Turns out we've been carrying car seats the wrong way this whole time

Whoa. Can I go back and do it all over again with this carrying trick? Babywearing can also solve this issue, but at some point, most parents will carry an infant car seat. This will help save your back! http://on.today.com/2sXlRft

Sometimes babies prefer one side over the other during breastfeeding. Here's a helpful tip to try out next time. It won't work for all of the reasons babies show a preference, but may just do the trick for yours!

Today's is one I see pop up on different breastfeeding pages now and again. Sometimes a baby shows a preference to nurse on one side over the other. This is a way to help keep the set-up as similar as possible for baby -- bringing the comfort he or she needs -- while still switching breasts, bringing comfort to Mom.

New research ends age-old debate: Will you spoil your baby if you pick it up each time it cries?

Of course you can't spoil a baby by holding and cuddling! Good thing we have research to back up our common sense!

New research ends age-old debate: Will you spoil your baby if you pick it up each time it cries? New research points to cuddled children growing up to be healthier, less depressed, kinder, more empathetic, and more productive adults.

The Impact Breastfeeding Struggles Can Have On Mothers' Mental Health

One more reason why support in the postpartum period is so critical. Do you know who to reach out to if you're experiencing breastfeeding problems? If you need mom-to-mom support? If you need mental health support? Don't wait until baby is born! Make your postpartum plan for help and resources while you're still pregnant. A childbirth educator and doula can help you create a postpartum plan that helps. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-impact-breastfeeding-struggles-can-have-on-mothers-mental-health_562924a7e4b0443bb5631f1b

Unexpected Interventions Women Often Leave Off Their Birth Plans - Mothering

The not-so-typical items on a birth plan you may want to consider adding. Remember, a birth plan is not for "planning" but a helpful way to share your preferences in labor and to open the conversation about choices and interventions early on (ie, long before labor) with your care provider. http://www.mothering.com/articles/unexpected-interventions-women-leave-off-birth-plans/

Nurses invent drape that allows mom-baby contact during C-section

Let's hope this innovative new c-section drape catches on! Skin to skin is so important, and yet so difficult to come by in the OR. This new tool would be a helpful addition to the "family friendly/gentle" cesarean that is happening at progressive hospitals in the US. http://www.richmond.com/business/local/article_6a61730c-f78b-5cef-8c96-0967a9da554d.html

Nurses invent drape that allows mom-baby contact during C-section About one-third of births in the United States each year are by cesarean section, and often those moms don’t get to have immediate skin-to-skin contact with their babies.

American Society of Anesthesiologists - Eating a light meal during labor

This just in... it's safe to eat during labor! Oh wait, we've known that for a while now. But it's now being officially reported by American Society of Anesthesiologists!

"Most healthy women can skip the fasting and, in fact, would benefit from eating a light meal during labor, suggests research being presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2015 annual meeting. Improvements in anesthesia care have made pain control during labor safer, reducing risks related to eating, researchers note." http://asahq.org/about-asa/newsroom/news-releases/2015/10/eating-a-light-meal-during-labor

Short excerpt from a testimonial I just received from a fantastic first-time dad... can I say just how much I love his word, "doula-vangelist?!"

"Now that we have been through the entire process, I am officially a doula-vangelist! I don't understand why anyone would choose not to hire a doula. Cara was great at helping us explore our expectations, create a birth plan and consider all possible outcomes. She gave us suggestions such as Hypnobabies and went above and beyond with encouraging emails, texts and educational classes. She was an invaluable resource with supportive information and contacts before and after the birth. On the day my wife went into labor, she was a complete rock star."

27 Smartest Things Partners Say in the Labor Room 09/29/2015

27 Smartest Things Partners Say in the Labor Room

Partners -- especially dads -- get a bad rap for their ability to keep it together and support a laboring mom. But it turns out, partners often know how to love and support mom the best. http://pamperedbirth.com/saltlakecity-birth-doula/my-soap-box/27-smartest-things-partners-say-in-the-labor-room

27 Smartest Things Partners Say in the Labor Room I'll admit it. This is a VERY reactionary post. I saw this list: 27 Dumbest Things Dads Have Said in the Delivery Room and it bugged me. Because in the many births I've attended, the amazing, supportive, helpful and loving partners have far, far outweighed the fumbles. And I'm really tired of the…

Lamaze for Parents : Blogs : Making Noise in Labor and Birth

Perhaps a funny topic, but it's important to learn about! As a doula, I've heard LOTS in labor. And you know what? Those moms did an excellent job of coping. http://www.givingbirthwithconfidence.org/blog/making-noise-in-labor-and-birth

Lamaze for Parents : Blogs : Making Noise in Labor and Birth Most birthing moms use some kind of noise -- or lots of noises -- as a way to cope with contractions during labor and birth. It may seem odd or even a little concerning that you could make loud noises in labor, in front of your partner and "strangers" like nursing staff and your care provider. But a…
