Meet Marcus and Natalie, our last pair of service leaders!
Why did you join Side by Side?
Marcus: I joined Side by Side because I wanted to learn more about the opioid epidemic in the country. This was the only organization where I felt that I could actually learn and make an impact on the issue. What I didnโt expect to gain was a sense of ownership over alleviating this issue and a sense of community at Side by Side.
Natalie: I joined Side by Side because I wanted to become more knowledgeable on other social justice issues that I had not paid as much attention to. I feel that Side by Side has reshaped my life into reflecting on almost everything and truly analyzing how important it is to be aware of the various social justice issues we discuss.

Next up are Achilles and Jenni, our fourth pair of service leaders this year!
Why did you join Side by Side?
Achilles: After become aware about the inequalities that afflict our society and learning more about them through courses here at UC San Diego, I felt the need to do more, beyond just the classroom. Initially, I was just looking for a community service organization, but after a friend reached out to me to join Side by Side, I ended up finding so much more.
Jenni: I wanted to join an organization that would allow me to further my passion in social justice. Side by Side gave me the opportunity to give back to my community through turning my knowledge about certain social justice issues into action and service. After learning about the structural and social inequities that exist in our society, I felt a need to do more than just explain; I wanted to learn more and take action. Through Side by Side, I am continuously learning to recognize the privileges I have, gaining more awareness and understanding about the various issues that different communities face, and defining what service- strong, direct, sustainable service- means to me.

Next up are Kristine and Katrina, our fourth pair of service leaders this year!
Why did you join Side by Side?
Kristine: I joined Side by Side to have the opportunity to find community through service/social justice-learning. I wanted to join something in which I would be able to gain awareness on things I never really considered or thought of before. I recognized that the privileges that I have, as a student, that allow me the spaces to learn and educate myself on various social issues, and I wanted to be able to pay that knowledge and education forward to communities and those around me.
Katrina: Itโs hard to explain, but when I first decided to join Side by Side, I just felt drawn to it. Iโd always been interested in addressing social justice issues but felt like I wasnโt well-versed enough to take any kind of action. Since joining, Iโve come to appreciate how this org strives to create a space for continuous growth and learning. This way, a diverse group of people can come together to not only learn from one another but also from the communities they work alongside. There are so many people out there with all kinds of knowledge, and itโs been an honor to have the opportunity to learn from them. One of my biggest takeaways was that I didnโt need to be an expert on an issue to address it; I just needed to be open-minded and willing to learn...
I feel like what Iโve said sounds really cheesy or too much like a textbook response, but like I said, itโs hard to explain. There are some experiences that are best understood by actually experiencing them, and I canโt wait to share that with this yearโs collaborative!

Why did you join Side by Side?
Lusi: I wanted to join an organization where I could pursue my passion for social justice and also learn about social justice issues and felt that Side by Side could provide that type of space for me!
Roy: I joined because of Side by Side's environment. It allowed me to explore and critically think about different perspectives and to further my understanding regarding the nuances and relationships between society and the many issues we face today.
*Lusi is about as passionate as service as Roy is about food.

Today's spotlight goes to Vicky and Niral, our second pair of service leaders for this year!
Why did you join Side by Side?
Vicky: I spent majority of my time in high school volunteering with the mindset of how good it would look on my college apps. Coming into college, I finally got a chance to really think about what doing service should mean and how I wanted to see changes in the world. Joining Side by Side created that space for me. As cliched as that may sound, it was a great learning space with people who not only educated me but also learned beside me on the different social justice issues that happens around the world.
Niral: I honestly was just intrigued by the idea of spending my spring break doing something not focused on myself, and connecting with a new community (what I got out of this org was so much more, though).
*Vicky has a turtle named Tortoise, while Niral is open to any of you reaching out to her for questions about the organization or anything in general.

Meet Alice and Joseph, two service leaders who will be focusing on mental health for the year!
Why did you join Side by Side?
Alice: I joined Side by Side because I am passionate about service, and I believe that we have to work towards achieving social justice and equity in our societies. Side by Side has given me the chance to provide strong direct service for issues that I am passionate about, and I really value the community of like-minded individuals striving for a better global society.
Joseph: The amount of growth I have done and the knowledge of social justice I have gained from my experiences within the organization are the epitome of why I joined Side by Side. I had never done service before and Side by Side was the best way to begin my journey towards active global citizenship.

Meet Alex and Priscilla, our Alternative Weekends Chairs! They are responsible for coordinating the local, weekend trips of our Movement.
Why did you join Side by Side?
Alex: I joined Side by Side to spread awareness of the social issues around us. By joining Side by Side I have learned that these social issues affect my everyday life without me knowing it. So why not be part of the change?
Priscilla: I joined Side by Side because I am passionate about helping others and wanted a deeper understanding of what community service meant. Side by Side gave me the opportunity to learn and act upon issues that I did not realize were happening and gave me the tools and the courage to speak up against injustice.
*Alex likes long walks on the beach while Priscilla likes watching the sunset by herself.
