FME Pre-School Parents
Sunday, Sept 19th
Dear Pre-K Parents/Guardians,
This letter is to inform you that a student in each pre-school class at the STAC Annex has tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. The last day these students were in the building was Wednesday, September 15th.
All current preschool students at FME are considered close contacts and will need to quarantine until Saturday Sept 25th, returning to school, if asymptomatic, on Monday September 27th. Close contact pre-school students may test on Wednesday, Sept 22nd and if the results are negative and your child is asymptomatic, they may return to school on Thursday, September 23rd.
*If your child develops any symptoms, please isolate and call Public Health at 907-225-4350.
Siblings of your close contact pre-k child are considered contacts of contacts and if asymptomatic, are ok to continue to go to school.
You can contact the district nurse at 907-228-8966, Public Health at 907-225-4350, your healthcare provider, or myself if you have further questions or concerns. Additional information about what to do if your student is sick or exposed to COVID-19 can also be found on these websites: KGBSD, DHSS, and CDC.
You childâs preschool teacher will be contacting you today to answer any questions you may have. You may call me also at (907) 370-3620.

FME Families,
With March brings warmer weather and longer days. It also brings:
Start of the 3rd Trimester (March 8th)
Parent Teacher Conferences (March 8th â 11th)
Report Cards home March 10th
No School March 12th
Spring Break (March 15th â 19th)
Important: If you plan to travel for Spring Break, please read the followingâŚ
KGBSD has recently adopted a policy to for staff & students traveling North or South of Ketchikan.
- If your trip spans less than 72hrs, you are ok to come back to school without quarantine. (72hrs means wheels up to wheels down in Ketchikan)
- If your trip exceeds 72hrs, you will need to quarantine for a minimum of 5 days before returning to school and have a negative COVID test that was done between day 5 and day 7 after returning to Ketchikan OR if you choose not to test, you must self-quarantine for 10 days.
- If you self-quarantine and test, you must self-monitor for 14-days and if you develop any signs or symptoms of COVID, you must immediately self-quarantine and get tested. You will remain on quarantine (if symptomatic) until a negative COVID test result is received or self-quarantine for 10 days after onset of symptoms.
- Children 10 years and under need to follow the travel guidelines of the adult or older sibling over the age of 10 that they are traveling with.
For example: If Johnny, who is 9 years old, travels with his parents to Seattle and stays for more than 72hrs, he does not need to get a negative Covid test to return to school. He does however need to follow the 5 day quarantine. If his parent(s) get a negative Covid test result he may also return to school.
- If individual (staff or student) is fully vaccinated and it has been two weeks since the second vaccination, you do not need to quarantine or get Covid tested. You may return to school as long as you are Covid symptom free.
Senerio question:
You, your husband, and three Fawn Mountain School children travel to Boise Idaho leaving Ketchikan at 8:00am Thursday morning March 18th. All of you return to Ketchikan at 11:00am on Sunday, March 21st. None of your family have been vaccinated for Covid. Your children's ages are 7, 11, and 12 years old. What steps do you need to take in order for your children to be able to come back to school?
(a) Nothing, because we were only gone for three days (72hrs). They can come back to school immediately.
(b) Got tested as soon as we got back then during the 5 days of quarantine we received negative Covid tests results for all the children. The children are good to come back to school.
(c) 10 days of quarantine and no Covid tests, then the children can come back to school.
(d) Quarantine for 5 days then Covid tests for the 11 and 12 year old which received negative results. All the children can then come to school.
If you chose answers C & D you are correct! Answer âAâ in incorrect because you were gone for over 72hrs. Answer B is also incorrect because the Covid tests needed to occur after 5 days of quarantine.
Wherever you spend your Spring Break, I hope it is restful and enjoyable!
Best Wishes,
Nick Higson, Principal FME
There will be no afterschool clubs, Monday 3/8 & Tuesday 3/9.
Thank you

Fawn Mountain PTA Spirit Sale!!
FME Parents, if you have your child tested for Covid and you have not heard back from Creekside Clinic, Peace Health, or Public Health within 3 days, please call and ask for the results. They are very busy and sometimes they do not call back if results are negative due to high volume of people being tested
Thank you.
Fawn Mountain School Families,
Governor Dunleavy recently sent out an alert asking all Alaskans to take immediate action to stop the spread of COVID. Commissioner Johnson followed the message in a separate meeting explaining that schools need to continue to work with their municipality in making decisions regarding schools.
With this information, we are continuing to work with the KGBSD School Board, Ketchikan EOC policy group, and Ketchikan Public Health in making educational decisions for the students' safety and health in mind.
Currently, the district will continue to operate at the medium levels currently in place. Students here at Fawn Mountain School and the STAC Annex will continue with in-person learning five days a week.
There will be no afterschool programs for the week of Nov 16th-20th.
We thank you for all of your support and diligence in keeping staff and students safe and healthy. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Nick Higson, Principal
Dear Parents and Families of Fawn Mountain Elementary,
This evening, the School Board voted to move our district Covid-19 risk level to Medium in
response to the rise in cases in our community. Fortunately, due to all of the hard work by staff,
planning, and resources put in place since the beginning of the school year, the adjustments
needed at Fawn Mountain Elementary School are relatively minor. Students will all come to
school tomorrow, including our preschool students, and continue attending Monday through
Friday at the normal school times. The district will stay at the Medium level for a minimum of two
weeks, unless the need arises to increase to High. Below are some of the adjustments made at
this risk level:
Fawn Mountain Elementary School Medium Risk Covid Plan
School Schedule
All students will continue to be onsite five days a week. If the medium risk level is
sustained and approaches High, we may re-adjust and students attend Monday
Thursday with Friday used for at-home learning and teacher preparation for High Risk
100% at-home learning.
Student Placement
In-district transfers of students from elementary schools within KGBSD will only be
considered in cases of profound and demonstrated academic need. Other student
enrollments will continue up to the pre-established classroom caps.
Physical Spacing
All student seating need to be arranged in the classroom so that students are 6 feet
away from each other. If the room does not allow 6 feet spacing, the students will need
to be arranged to be as close to 6 feet as reasonably possible while keeping the room
functional for learning.
Cohort Groups
Maintain cohort groups by class. Recess option will move from by grade level to by
class only.
Specials
PE classes inside the gym will be required to wear masks during activities that are not
conducive to appropriate social distancing. If class is held outside, students would be
able to continue to have no mask on. Masks will be required 100% of the time in music
class.
Prep for At Home Learning
Teachers ensure students are adequately prepared for at-home learning. âGo-bagâ
packets are updated, Canvas courses are published and practiced in-class, andat-home learning.
Have a printout ready of login information for email, Canvas, Pearson, etc., to be sent
home and emailed to students and parents.
Hallways
Limit student time in the hallway. Students transiting in the hallway should be for
scheduled activities (such as Title groups or SpEd services), bathroom use, and
unplanned situations such as disciplinary office visits or health aide examinations.
Student Release
Parent Pickup and bus riders will remain the same. Students are escorted out of school
on an individual basis to their parent(s) waiting in front of the school or in the car pick up
line. Bus riders are walked out of the school in an orderly fashion to their designated bus.
Support Services
Title and Special Education services will continue. Staff will make full use of PPE if
interacting in close proximity of a student for longer than five minutes.
Office Visits
Staff will limit indoor social congregations, including in the office. Students sent to the
health aide for symptom evaluation will be seen individually. Parents and visitors will
continue to check in at the office. Materials will need to be dropped off for their children.
Students will be called down to the office if parents need to make contact with them
personally.
Mask Wearing
Students and staff continue wearing masks except for when eating and drinking. âMask
Breaksâ should be used only when developmentally needed, be very short in duration,
and at times when a student is more than 6 feet away from another student.
Afterschool Activities
Suspension of all afterschool clubs until the school district moves back to a lower risk
level.
All of us at Fawn Mountain Elementary School are very appreciative for the opportunity to
continue critical onsite learning, and I am proud of our ability to do so while maximizing student
and staff safety. We thank the community for your support and granting of resources to do so. If
you have any questions about this change in risk level and our plans to meet the challenge,
please call the school or reach out to me directly.
To Your Childâs Success!
Nick Higson
Fawn Mountain Elementary Principal
