Virtual Auction!! Help Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra!
Aloha Everyone!!!
Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is having an auction!!
My heart is with this non-profit as it was the only way Samantha could continue playing the Viola when we got to Maui. Please share and bid for the amazing items offered. They help children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to play in an orchestra. You can also donate at
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Feeling inspired by the to do the same in our own performing arts community. I'd like to ask as many members of our ohana as possible to video themselves singing twenty seconds of themselves washing their hands while singing their favorite Broadway tune. Then post a link where your followers can donate to your favorite Maui performing arts organization like...

MYPO Alumni Spotlight #1: Eduarda Torres

"Hi, my name is Eduarda, I am 19 years old and I have been involved with the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra for about four years. When I first joined I was very closed off. I remember the first day I was pretty tense, but there was another clarinetist whom I learned alot from at the time, who helped me warm up to everyone. He was very calm and outgoing and he was very patient with me. Once I got acquainted with everyone I was much more comfortable. Everyone in the orchestra was very welcoming to me. I would like to add that playing in an orchestra is very different from playing in a band, there are many more string instruments, like violin, cello, and viola. But there are woodwinds such as clarinet and flute.
I recommend joining an orchestra because your music knowledge will expand as well as your friend circle. Playing in the Maui Youth Orchestra changed my life in a few ways and I still carry the friendships I have made with me to this day even though my friends who were once in the orchestra have left.
On the subject of playing an instrument, I will add that it's absolutely wonderful. I think everyone should play an instrument because it's fun, educational, and you carry the knowledge youve learned throughout your entire life. When I first started band in middle school, I had no idea how to play anything. But then the clarinet was introduced to me and I fell in love with it. I practiced everyday for hours until I got confident in playing. It was an incredible learning experience for me and I can still play pretty decently to this day even though I dont play very often. But getting to look back on all the memories I made through music is very nostalgic and brings me many happy feelings. Band in middle school was by far the best thing I got to experience as a 12-14 year old.
Now I'm 19 years old, still involved with music and I can confidently say that it's a gift. Music of any kind is a gift but being able to play it just makes it extra special. Having an orchestra family you can be with and play with is special and I can say it gives you an escape from life itself if you want to get lost in music for a while because maybe it's what makes you feel really good. Growth, friends, knowledge, and memories."

MYPO Musician Spotlight: #1
Current Player - James Ancheta

"I first heard about MYPO when I was in 4th grade. I heard from my mom that I might be eligible to join MYPO and play in a group of musicians, I would have never thought that I could have been able to play in MYPO, but here I am playing with the orcestra and I am so happy I chose to do so. Ive been playing the cello for 5 years and Ive joined MYPO ever since 5th grade. It's so much fun to play music with others because it not only makes you better but also allows you to bond with others in the orchestra. My favorite thing about playing my instrument is that I am able to express my feelings through it. Music has changed my life. Being able to play music in a group is such a great experience to have and I wouldnt have made so many great friends without it"

Visiting violinist Andrew Wu (violinist in the Michigan Opera Theater) graciously agreed to help MYPO with the Instrument Petting Zoo yesterday at Ka'ahumanu Mall!

Andrew shared that he started playing the violin at the age of 7 after trying all of the instruments at a Petting Zoo put on by the Cleveland Orchestra!

Mahalo for helping us during your time here on Maui, Andrew!
