Community Members & Students! Join Mindy Meyers for a semester of exploration in 3D design at the West Campus on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:50 pm CT beginning on January 9th!
This course is FUN and engaging! Intro to Art Design is a three dimensional art class that will help students develop their own creative process and technical skills. We will work to together to explore and experiment with a variety of materials, both art and non-art related to create projects that have emphasis on the three dimensional design elements, principles, and methods. This course will expand the student’s problem solving skills while creating an open dialog for the discussion of ideas, solutions, and techniques for their projects. This course will encourage students to think critically and approach each project with creativity and intention. Each student will complete six sculptural objects through the course of the semester. The final exam, the sixth assignment, is a class group project in which we will build a giant inflatable sculpture that will encourage the students to learn how to install a piece of public art.

The fall 2022 semester at Bay College West Campus saw a return of studio art courses on the schedule. Assisting in ushering art courses back to the West Campus is Mindy Meyers, who is currently teaching the offerings in Iron Mountain. Many community members will know Mindy from her work as the Program Director for the Iron Mountain Downtown Development Authority and also as a resident artist at The Studios at CWRK Collective.
Mindy brings a rich art background with her to the position, including being a professional artist and an art mentor who also has an MFA from Arizona State University with a concentration in fibers. This fall semester, she has brought her talents to Bay College to teach Drawing I, which has been met with a great reception and has a mix of community members and degree-seeking students. “Mindy is an excellent addition to our art faculty, inspiring students and community members to embrace their creativity and hone their skills,” said Jessica Van Slooten, Bay College Dean of Arts and Sciences.
In this class, students have been learning how to draw from observation using traditional mark making tools such as charcoal and conte crayons. Students also participated in the Iron Mountain Public Arts Advisory Committee's inaugural Art Crawl on November 17th. She states that her favorite part of being an art educator is creating a diverse learning environment for her students and to inspire them to think through the elements of art and find their voice as a creative thinker.
Mindy will continue teaching at the West Campus in the winter 2023 semester, when she will be teaching Intro to Art Design, a three-dimensional design course. This course will end the semester with a collaborative inflatable public art sculpture. As one of her favorite projects, it will teach students to work together to build something significant and learn how to go through the proper channels of installing a work of art in a public place.
Registration for winter and summer semester courses is happening now. For more information on course and program offerings, students can visit the www.baycollege.edu or call: Iron Mountain Campus - 906-302-3000, Escanaba Campus: 906-217-4010.
