“There's nothing more important that you can give your kids, or any kid, than an education." Stand for Children - Indiana wants to break down obstacles for children.

"When I see something that's unjust. Because I feel like, you know, we've been a victim of that system as well. It really fires me up and it makes me want to make a difference."

Check out this IndyStar story featuring Stand for Children - Indiana organizer Carolina Figueroa, who talks about how her parents sacrificed to give her a better life.
Please help protect our kids, especially those under 12 unvaccinated. Thank you!
With Covid Delta variant cases on the rise both nation wide and in Indiana (Anderson schools just quarantined 100 students among many others), many neighboring school districts have complied with CDC guidelines and mandated masks. Please sign this petition started by Kelleen Chernet urging CCS to mandate face masks in our schools, especially elementary schools for both students and staff, as students are all under 12 unvaccinated. Volunteers like Irma with Stand for Children - Indiana are calling on the Indianapolis Public Schools district to prioritize language justice so families can stay connected with their children's schools.

"For me to be engaged, and for other non-native English speakers to be engaged, we have to do double the work compared to an English speaking parent."

Read this to learn more about the science of reading and why Lucy Calkins has rewritten her curriculum to include a fuller embrace of phonics and the science of reading.

Calkins has been a pre-eminent leader of “balanced literacy,” a loosely defined teaching philosophy. In recent years, parents and educators who champion the “science of reading” have fiercely criticized Professor Calkins and other supporters of balanced literacy.

There are no words to express the heartbreak of yesterday’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas – the 27th school shooting just this year in our country.

A community was destroyed when gun violence took the lives of innocent children just days from summer break. Today, hold your babies close, but then take a moment to write a state and federal lawmaker and ask them to do something to stop this carnage. As U.S. Senator Chris Murphy said it, “This only happens in this country and nowhere else.”

Ask IPS leaders to close opportunity gaps by growing what works

According to state data, only 3.1% of Black IPS students in grades 3-8 are testing on grade level in English and math, and that number is only 5.4% for Latino students. We know all children are capable of greatness, so this gap speaks to the need for system changes and improvements.

Briggs: Indiana is a college degree desert and the economy is wilting

If you haven’t already, read this IndyStar article that explains why Indiana is a college degree desert, which includes details about the last decade of funding cuts to education.

“Indiana’s inflation-adjusted spending per K-12 student was 17% lower in 2020 than it was in 2010. During that time, state and local governments spent $5 billion on tax incentives for businesses — while adding a meager $17 million to the budgets of colleges and universities.”
